Well, last week I stepped out of my office for a minute only to return and find my 5 year old Viewsonic 19" flat panel dead. Oh, the monitor's power light was green, but no display. After checking connections and running tests, there was no question.
I've actually been looking for a 24" monitor for a while and was finaly deciding on the Dell 2407WFP-HC. Unfortunately, the office was dead without a monitor and Dell said 3-5 weeks for delivery. So I went online and began the research, but based on reviews, nothing stood out except the Dell. Due to the time period, I went to the new MicroCenter in MD and looked around. They had The Samsung 245, Viewsonic, HP and the Gateway FHD2400.
I had never seen the FHD2400, so I went to their instore internet kiosk and did some quick checks. Nothing. Checked the Gateway site...strangely nothing...
The monitor looked very nice, and although hesitant I asked to get one from stock. New Store, No inventory..... So I ran up the street to Best Buy which for large purchases I tend to despise. Even more now that their internal web site vs internet web site issue has become public a year after I detected the misrepresentation in my local store on many occasions.
Well, this time I found a wonderfull sales person. They actually had the original 24" gateway model and the new one. Unfortunately the demo was not connected to the wall of monitors running the demo app so it was hard to compare. The sales person upon my request immediately moved the demo to the wall of monitors. Like I said, she was great. We looked at it and compared it to the Samsung, LG and the original Gateway. Absolutely no comparison. The new 24" FHD 2400 looked great on the surface.
I decided to take it home and check it out for a couple days to see if it would suit the purpose. I'm in my second day, and so far I have to say it's very nice. The picture is clear and very bright and the colors compared to all of the others I've looked at are amazing. Other 24" monitors seem flat and dull compared to this one.
I have the monitor connected to 2 computers via KVM switch. The first weird thing I noticed was ghosting on characters. It didn't make sense. So I switched to the other computer which actually has a slighly lower quality video card, and I was amazed to see no ghosting at all. Both are connected via VGA connectors. So I changed the one computer to DVI (I bought a cable when I bought the monitor). The ghosting went away. It must be something specific to the graphics card or driver.
I would recommend using DVI or HDMI connections to this monitor.
Petty things like getting used to the touch sensitive menu controls and a preference for either 2 DVI and/or 2 HDMI connections are very minor. The viewing angle is more narrow than some of the others, but it's probably due to the TN panel type. If you are using this as a monitor then this is no problem. If multiple people will be using it to view TV or video or if this is for multi-player games, then you might want to test it out in that environment before committing, otherwise so far this is a no brainer.
I've done testing for dead pixels, and so far I see no flaws in the display. I've not run any of the technical monitor tests on it, so I'm not sure how it will technically measure up, but from a user perspective, unless something pops up, I'm sold. I might buy a 2nd for that dual screen experience if this holds up.
UPDATE 11/6/2007
I've now had this monitor for a couple weeks and operationally it's still great. I have noticed when the monitor turns on, that there is significant backlight leakage around the edges, but this doesn't seem to affect actual use, so I'm still very happy with the monitor. There may be "better" at higher prices, but unless you plan on having multiple people viewing from different angles, it's a still a keeper.

HP 2709m 27-Inch Diagonal Full HD LCD Monitor (Black) Review

HP 2709m 27-Inch Diagonal Full HD LCD Monitor (Black)

My 24" Acer LCD died a few weeks ago, so I went to Fry's Electronics to browse the selection. It's been a few years since I researched LCD's, and I'm happy to report that the technology has come a long way! The HP 2709m exemplifies this beautifully. After owning and using this monitor daily for the last two weeks, I've decided to write a review for it. Here are my thoughts on the monitor:
* 27" - huge!
* Great contrast
* Great colors
* Reflective-coating (not sure what the technical name is) - turns the monitor into a bit of a mirror, but also sharpens the colors tremendously versus matte-finish LCD's so to me it's worth a bit of on-screen reflection
* Reasonable response time. Aside from working and web-surfing, I also play FPS games (e.g. Crysis) and watch movies on this monitor; I've been satisfied with the pixel response time. Ghosting is non-existent, though LCD monitors can't hold a candle to traditional CRT monitors when comparing image stability on fast-moving objects. For instance, when a camera pans the background in a movie, or when you spin your character around in a video game, just like all LCD's, there is some blurring (not ghosting, there is a difference).
* Built-in Speakers - I haven't used them, but they are there if I ever need them.
* No annoying LED's - you can turn off the power LED on the front of the monitor so that there is no annoying LED blasting you in the eyes like many LCD monitors seem to have. This is especially nice when watching a movie in a dark room - the only thing lit up on the monitor is the screen itself.
* Ambient Light Sensor - automatically adjusts the brightness of the monitor to the brightness of the ambient lighting in your room. For instance, if you are using the monitor in a dark room, the brightness is automatically decreased so that your eyes don't fry (likewise, in a bright room, the monitor brightens the back-light). This feature can be disabled; I have it turned off because I prefer a fairly dark monitor relative to what the monitor's designers must prefer, especially when reading onscreen text. The only thing I would change would be to add a user-selectable base-level for the ambient light sensor so that it can properly adjust to the environment using the viewer's personal preference as the base level.
* The stand is solid and has a small footprint.
* The look and finish is understated, glossy and bares few labels. Very nice.
Overall, I am impressed and give this monitor a full five stars.

HP Pavilion Elite M9550F Desktop PC Review

HP Pavilion Elite M9550F Desktop PC
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My review is mostly for Enthusiast/Professional Photographers...
I needed a new powerful desktop with 64-bit processing. My Sony Vaio desktop that once was cutting edge two years ago,is now not able to keep up with many of todays demands. Especially my updated versions of Photoshop CS, and Lightroom 2.3 which works native in 64-bit.
64-bit allows windows to accept, use and maximize a computer with 4+ gbs of RAM. The HP Pavilion Elite M9550F comes pre-installed with a maxed out 8gbs of ram.
So for a photographer using high end software, and downloading large amounts of files. This computer works swiftly and effortlessly.
On my older sony desktop, it took about 15 minutes to download 4gb off of a compact flashcard. I could not do any other task while it downloaded, or risked data loss or the download not completing.
It takes about a minute to download with the HP, and I listen to music and/or check emails with no detectable slow down in the system.
On my old desktop, if I changed modules in lightroom, or did any form of editing it took a few seconds to see the changes. I sometimes had to hit Ctrl+Z so I can see the before image. With my new HP,... It's so fast that I miss the changes if they are not drastic. The screen appears to blink, because it responds so fast to my commands.
The onboard 1TB of storage is another huge plus. There are still very few desktops on the market with an internal 1TB drive. I have purchased three 1TB external hardrives, with two mirroring the HP's internal drive. There is a bay available that can be used for an additional internal drive, and you can purchase a HP Media Drive up to 1TB to plug right into a special bay. No wires, or software is necessary.
I distribute CD's to models and clients often. The LightScribe technology that is part of the CD/DVD drive lets you etch custom labels and artwork right on a LightScribe-enabled CD or DVD. This allows you to look professional and a cut about the rest.
There are several ways to hook up a monitor, so I have the VGA attached to my old CRT monitor, and HDMI port attached to a 30inch flatscreen. Using dual displays is just a few clicks, and takes your image editing to another level.
There are a lot of features that I'm sure I missed, but these are the standout features to me, using it for photography.

Other features include a ginormous 1 TB hard drive, ATI Radeon HD 4850 graphics with up to 3579 MB of total available graphics memory, HDMI and DVI video outputs, 15-in-1 memory card reader, up to 8 channels of surround sound output, and Gigabit Ethernet wired networking. It comes with a wired keyboard and mouse.
The pre-installed 64-bit version of Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium (Service Pack 1) includes all of the Windows Media Center capabilities for turning your PC into an all-in-one home entertainment center. In addition to easily playing your DVD movies and managing your digital audio library, you'll be able to record and watch your favorite TV shows (even HDTV). Vista also integrates new search tools throughout the operating system, includes new parental control features, and offers new tools that can warn you of impending hardware failures.
The Basics
Processor: With four execution cores, the 2.5 GHz Intel Core 2 Quad Processor Q9300 blows through processor-intensive tasks in demanding multitasking environments and makes the most of highly threaded applications. Part of Intel's "Penryn" line of 45nm processors, it features new hafnium-infused circuitry to reduce electrical current leakage in transistors and help this desktop run cooler. It also features Intel Trusted Execution Technology, which provides hardware-based mechanisms that help protect against software-based attacks and protects the confidentiality and integrity of data stored or created on the client PC.
Whether you're creating multimedia, annihilating your gaming enemies, or running compute-intensive applications at one time, new quad-core processing will change the way you do everything. The Q9300 has a top-of-the-line 1333 MHz front-side bus (FSB) and a 6 MB L2 cache. (An L2, or secondary, cache temporarily stores data; and a larger L2 cache can help speed up your system's performance. The FSB carries data between the CPU and RAM, and a faster front-side bus will deliver better overall performance.)
You get four dedicated, physical threads help operating systems and applications deliver additional performance that enhance multi-tasking and multi-threaded performance across many types of applications and work loads. The Smart Memory Access feature improves system performance by hiding memory latency, thus optimizing the use of available computer data bandwidth to provide data to the processor when and where it is needed. The Advanced Digital Media Boost feature effectively doubles the execution speed for instructions used widely in multimedia and graphics applications. And with the Intel 64 Architecture, the processor can access larger amounts of memory. With appropriate 64-bit hardware and software, platforms based on an Intel processor supporting Intel 64 Architecture can allow the use of extended virtual and physical memory.

Hard Drive: This Pavilion Elite provides a stunning 1 TB of storage (that's 1,000 Gigabytes), from a single Serial ATA hard drive (7200 RPM), offering one of the largest capacities you'll currently find in a desktop. You'll enjoy the space for storing your entire music collection as well as your DVDs and downloaded TV shows and movies. This SATA hard drive also quickens the pace with a higher speed transfer of data--akin to Firewire and USB 2.0.

Memory: The 8 GB of installed RAM (PC6400) helps boost the amount of available video RAM that's shared with this notebook's video card. It also offers a fast 800 MHz speed. The 8 GB of RAM maximizes this desktop's capacity.

DVD/CD Drive: This multiformat DVD/CD drive is compatible with writing both DVD+ and DVD- disc formats as well as dual-layer (DL) DVD+/-R discs, which can store up to 8.5 GB of data. It features 12x DVD±R DL Write Once, 16x DVD±R, 8x DVD+RW, 6x DVD-RW, 12x DVD-RAM, 40x CD-R, 32x CD-RW write speeds and 40x CD-ROM, and 16x DVD-ROM read speeds.
This LightScribe DVD±RW drive lets you laser-etch silkscreen quality text and images on to CDs and DVDs . Your software, PC and discs work together for a no-hassle way to burn just the labels you want. After you burn content, just flip the disc over, reinsert and burn your label--anything from a simple title to a full-disc work of art.

Keyboard & Mouse: It comes with an HP multimedia keyboard and scroller mouse (both with PS/2 connections).
Video & Audio Video is powered by the ATI Radeon HD 4850 graphics card, which provides 512 MB dedicated graphics memory and up to 3579 MB as allocated by the Windows Vista operating system. ATI Radeon HD 4800 Series GPUs bring the power of graphics "supercomputing" to gamers, setting a new standard for visual computing. With up to 1.2 teraFLOPS on tap, the TeraScale graphics engine delivers an immersive, cinematic gaming experience. Enhanced anti-aliasing (AA) and anisotropic filtering create striking graphics with unparalleled realism so you can max out the settings of the most demanding next-generation games or revitalize your favorite titles. You'll also be able to watch Blu-ray movies and play HD content with incredible visual fidelity and take your experience to another level with new multimedia capabilities. Sophisticated new features within ATI Avivo HD technology give you the freedom and flexibility to edit videos quickly and convert them to H.264 and MPEG-2 formats 1.8x faster than real-time.
The video card includes VGA and DVI video out as well as HDMI audio/video out options. This PC also offers an integrated audio card that can produce high definition surround sound configurable to 8 speakers.
Networking, Connectivity & Expansion This desktop can be wirelessly networked with the integrated Draft-N Wi-Fi LAN (802.11b/g/n). Mustang MV-TILT3 Tilt Wall Mount Adjustable for TV's up to 50-inches Review

Mustang MV-TILT3 Tilt Wall Mount Adjustable for TV's up to 50-inches
Average Reviews:

got this mount as part of promotion with 46 inch LCD. LCD weights over 80 pounds which is not that bad. Hanging the wall plate was relatively easy , but second person would be helpful if you are not handy. If you are putting this mount on the wall by yourself , I wouldn't be relying on the level attached to a mount, but rather level and drill the holes for the screws. Of course, be sure to find the studs first and make sure you can align the holes on the mount with the marks on the wall.
Averall the constraction of the mount is very solid. The tubes are detachable, so it makes a lot easier to screw the mount to the wall as there is no obstraction and less weight. I found only 3 cons with this product: 1.the TV screws and spacers provided are too generic and in my case added 0.5 inch to the distance from the wall. 2. Mount screws are too thin I think and not compatible with washers. The screw just doesn't go all the way because the hole in the washer is too small. 3. To adjust tilt for a large TV you need 2 people period. I tried to tighten one side first and then another and end up jamming my hand with tv to avoid it hitting the wall.
After all Mustang it's a good, solid mount , and what you really need to do is to decide between Static ot Tilt mounts.

DigiTV Universal Plasma and LCD TV Ceiling Mount for 27 to 80 Displays

My condo was built in 1880, so the bricks are a bit crumbly, so I didn't trust them to hold up my 46" LCD. So I found this thing which worked perfectly. Have had no problems with it.
The only weird thing about it is, there's enough play in the mount for the main pole, that it will actually tilt back from the weight of the TV. So i put 2 blocks of 2x8's on either side to support it on the wall.
Looks great in a loft for sure.
