Well, last week I stepped out of my office for a minute only to return and find my 5 year old Viewsonic 19" flat panel dead. Oh, the monitor's power light was green, but no display. After checking connections and running tests, there was no question.
I've actually been looking for a 24" monitor for a while and was finaly deciding on the Dell 2407WFP-HC. Unfortunately, the office was dead without a monitor and Dell said 3-5 weeks for delivery. So I went online and began the research, but based on reviews, nothing stood out except the Dell. Due to the time period, I went to the new MicroCenter in MD and looked around. They had The Samsung 245, Viewsonic, HP and the Gateway FHD2400.
I had never seen the FHD2400, so I went to their instore internet kiosk and did some quick checks. Nothing. Checked the Gateway site...strangely nothing...
The monitor looked very nice, and although hesitant I asked to get one from stock. New Store, No inventory..... So I ran up the street to Best Buy which for large purchases I tend to despise. Even more now that their internal web site vs internet web site issue has become public a year after I detected the misrepresentation in my local store on many occasions.
Well, this time I found a wonderfull sales person. They actually had the original 24" gateway model and the new one. Unfortunately the demo was not connected to the wall of monitors running the demo app so it was hard to compare. The sales person upon my request immediately moved the demo to the wall of monitors. Like I said, she was great. We looked at it and compared it to the Samsung, LG and the original Gateway. Absolutely no comparison. The new 24" FHD 2400 looked great on the surface.
I decided to take it home and check it out for a couple days to see if it would suit the purpose. I'm in my second day, and so far I have to say it's very nice. The picture is clear and very bright and the colors compared to all of the others I've looked at are amazing. Other 24" monitors seem flat and dull compared to this one.
I have the monitor connected to 2 computers via KVM switch. The first weird thing I noticed was ghosting on characters. It didn't make sense. So I switched to the other computer which actually has a slighly lower quality video card, and I was amazed to see no ghosting at all. Both are connected via VGA connectors. So I changed the one computer to DVI (I bought a cable when I bought the monitor). The ghosting went away. It must be something specific to the graphics card or driver.
I would recommend using DVI or HDMI connections to this monitor.
Petty things like getting used to the touch sensitive menu controls and a preference for either 2 DVI and/or 2 HDMI connections are very minor. The viewing angle is more narrow than some of the others, but it's probably due to the TN panel type. If you are using this as a monitor then this is no problem. If multiple people will be using it to view TV or video or if this is for multi-player games, then you might want to test it out in that environment before committing, otherwise so far this is a no brainer.
I've done testing for dead pixels, and so far I see no flaws in the display. I've not run any of the technical monitor tests on it, so I'm not sure how it will technically measure up, but from a user perspective, unless something pops up, I'm sold. I might buy a 2nd for that dual screen experience if this holds up.
UPDATE 11/6/2007
I've now had this monitor for a couple weeks and operationally it's still great. I have noticed when the monitor turns on, that there is significant backlight leakage around the edges, but this doesn't seem to affect actual use, so I'm still very happy with the monitor. There may be "better" at higher prices, but unless you plan on having multiple people viewing from different angles, it's a still a keeper.

My 24" Acer LCD died a few weeks ago, so I went to Fry's Electronics to browse the selection. It's been a few years since I researched LCD's, and I'm happy to report that the technology has come a long way! The HP 2709m exemplifies this beautifully. After owning and using this monitor daily for the last two weeks, I've decided to write a review for it. Here are my thoughts on the monitor:
* 27" - huge!
* Great contrast
* Great colors
* Reflective-coating (not sure what the technical name is) - turns the monitor into a bit of a mirror, but also sharpens the colors tremendously versus matte-finish LCD's so to me it's worth a bit of on-screen reflection
* Reasonable response time. Aside from working and web-surfing, I also play FPS games (e.g. Crysis) and watch movies on this monitor; I've been satisfied with the pixel response time. Ghosting is non-existent, though LCD monitors can't hold a candle to traditional CRT monitors when comparing image stability on fast-moving objects. For instance, when a camera pans the background in a movie, or when you spin your character around in a video game, just like all LCD's, there is some blurring (not ghosting, there is a difference).
* Built-in Speakers - I haven't used them, but they are there if I ever need them.
* No annoying LED's - you can turn off the power LED on the front of the monitor so that there is no annoying LED blasting you in the eyes like many LCD monitors seem to have. This is especially nice when watching a movie in a dark room - the only thing lit up on the monitor is the screen itself.
* Ambient Light Sensor - automatically adjusts the brightness of the monitor to the brightness of the ambient lighting in your room. For instance, if you are using the monitor in a dark room, the brightness is automatically decreased so that your eyes don't fry (likewise, in a bright room, the monitor brightens the back-light). This feature can be disabled; I have it turned off because I prefer a fairly dark monitor relative to what the monitor's designers must prefer, especially when reading onscreen text. The only thing I would change would be to add a user-selectable base-level for the ambient light sensor so that it can properly adjust to the environment using the viewer's personal preference as the base level.
* The stand is solid and has a small footprint.
* The look and finish is understated, glossy and bares few labels. Very nice.
Overall, I am impressed and give this monitor a full five stars.

I am very happy with my purchase of the Viewsonic VA1912wb. I found it to be a GREAT value in that I got a great widescreen at a reasonable price. A few things to mention.
** Amazon shipped it in great shape...double boxing via FedEx.
** Screen is very bright. I had to lower the brightness to near the lowest point. That is good...so there is room to the upside if I ever need that.
** The back of the monitor is very attractive. Sounds odd...but not for those that have the back facing outwards and visible. Mine happen to be in a study that is near the front entry...so having an attractive appearance is important to us. Cables are well concealed and routed behind a beauty plate. No odd cuts or stickers/tags...clean lines.
** Included instructions are minimal...but hey...there are only three items to hookup (power, input, speakers). There is also the web and customer support if necessary.
** KEY ITEM...this monitor has both analog and digital inputs. Clearly digital is the direction of future hookups...so make sure to ensure whatever monitor you purchase...it has digital inputs.
** The monitor includes the DVI cable. Many monitors do not and will cost you easily $20 more.
** The display is clear, crisp...and better than my monitor at work. Don't notice any dead pixels...no flaws observed.
I highly recommend this monitor and would purchase it again. I am happy with this purchase.

ViewSonic VX2233wm 22-Inch LCD Monitor Review

ViewSonic VX2233wm 22-Inch LCD Monitor

The "True HD 1080p" is probably this display's main selling point. The only HD source I had handy was an Xbox 360 with VGA output and a copy of Halo 3. The image quality was excellent and edege-to-edge with no black bars or image distortion. As an added bonus, the HD resolution requires a very sharp .248 dot pitch -- perfect for day to day use with text. The downside of True HD 16:9 is that the viewable height is only 10 and 5/8 (the shortest of any 22' LCD I've looked at) as opposed to a full 11 inches or more for viewing a two-page layout WYSIWYG.
The monitor installs easily and is automatically recognized by XP as a Plug and Play Monitor. The only advantage to installing Viewsonic's driver package (that I could tell) was the addition of a color-calibrated profile -- which didn't seem to make any difference.
Like most modern LCDs, its stand has only a tilt adjust and no height adjustment. I guess the assumption is that with a wide viewing angle, height adjustment is less critical.
I like that the screen has a matte, non-glare finish. I wish I could say the same about the bezel. The high gloss attracts fingerprints and dust like... well you fill in your own colorful analogy.
Button placement, on the lower right, is a poor choice for placing two displays side by side and flush. You can barely read the button labels against the piano black bezel, and the status indicator is far too big and bright. But I like how input source switching (VGA or DVI) can be achieved with a single button press.
The OSD has its share of quirks. Why did Viewsonic think the end user would enjoy being nagged about setting the display to 1920x1080 for optimal performance? Thankfully, this can be disabled. But it should never have been in the software in the first place.
As so many others have noted, the sound quality of the built-in rear-firing 2x2W speakers are truly abysmal -- completely without bass response of any kind and adequate for only the most basic of computer beeps.
The different ECO modes are an interesting concept and might be helpful if you plan on leaving the display on 24/7 without a screen saver -- to monitor a dynamic website for example. The most conservative setting (50% reduction in brightness) seems a bit too dark at first, but I was surprised at how quickly my eyes adapted.
In contrast (pun intended) the dynamic contrast feature worked poorly, often rendering video that was simply too dark. Also, ECO shouldn't be used with dynamic contrast and it would be good user interface design to automatically shut off the one when the other is selected. It would also be more useful if it were easier to access. I need to press nine buttons every time I want to change ECO settings. I'd love to see all 4 buttons replaced with a pushable scroll-wheel like on an HTC Mogul phone.
Rather than dynamic contrast, I would much rather have a dynamic ECO feature -- turning down the brightness during periods of less redrawing activity. Or better yet -- have some ability to sense ambient light levels and adjust brightness accordingly.
Bottom line: This is an excellent display for gaming, watching movies, and everyday use so long as you BYOS (bring your own speakers). Graphics professionals will want to look elsewhere.

I bought this monitor to replace a Westinghouse of a similar size that was a bargain over a year ago, but it was not that great and was only really a upgrade for someone used to playing on small monitors.
I wasn't sure what to expect with this one after my previous experience, but it has worked perfectly so far. Its a high end monitor when it comes to what it can do. 50,000 :1 and a 2ms response time are great numbers. If you are a gamer this monitor is one of the best you can get without purchasing a expensive 30" monitor. Games and videos look great and the details on this monitor are far better than I have had on any other monitor in the past.
I have mine hooked up using the cable out of the box which is fine for me, but it does not come with any other cables or connections if you are looking to hook this up another way.
The one issue I have seen is related to Windows 7. The drivers out of the box are only for XP and Vista so some people have had problems with the software that comes with the monitor not working and getting to resolutions of 1920x1200. I couldn't at first either so I downloaded the Fortemanager software directly from the LG website, restarted the compuer, went to the control panel options to change my resolution, hit advanced settings, and my screen just switched right to the highest resolution. I haven't had any trouble since, but from what I read online others have not received great responses from LG about getting upgraded Windows 7 drivers.

I have owned this monitor for six months now and it has been one of my best purchases in years. I wanted a some what large monitor to use on my glass computer desk which consist of my PC, Xbox 360, PS3, and an original Xbox. First, this awesome thing is full 1080P (1920X1080P) via HDMI, DVI, VGA and even component! it's also widescreen 16X10 and not 16X9, confused? it looks a bit taller and larger than other monitors of the same screen size (25.5).
All 16X9 material like PS3 and Xbox 360 games are upcoverted to 16X10 meaning your gaming world will look just a bit more skinny and taller, this makes the games look awesome though, I have switch to 16X9 mode a couple of times (you get slight 1 inch thick black bars on the top and bottom) but original 16X9 looks weird to me now, characters look fat etc similiar to when a full screen picture is stretch to fill a widescreen display. You will love gaming on 16X10 trust me it looks wonders without any loss of picture quality. I have my PC on VGA, my 360 on HDMI, my PS3 on DVI (via hdmi to dvi) and my original xbox on component running in 480p (note that this component input is capable of full 1080p though) I noticed that 480p on this monitor looks so much better than my old Sony 32 inch HDTV, games like halo 2 and ghost recon look like 720p games! I recommend to not use the build in speakers though (who does?) buy yourself some nice PC speakers and just use the audio out jack from the monitor and your set.
The 2ms response time is brilliant on first person shooters with no ghosting at all(ghosting is what makes the screen blurry when turning or slowly moving in games). The bluish tint was there with factory settings so take a few minutes to adjust the brightness and saturation, or use these:
SPLENDID : Scenery. BRIGHTNESS 100. CONTRAST 100. SHARPNESS 100. SATURATION 73, ASCR: OFF (VERY IMPORTANT) COLOR TEMP: Cool, SKIN TONE: Reddish. ASPECT CONTROL: FULL (BUT USE 4:3 FOR NON WIDESCREEN GAMES) and for xbox 360 go to your display settings and choose "1080p" from HDTV SETTINGS, choose "standard" from REFERENCE LEVELS, and choose "YCbCr709" from HDMI COLOR SPACE, for PS3 is all automatic so don't worry about it. There it is! enjoy!

ASUS MT276HE - 27" Wide LCD Monitors - Black Review

ASUS MT276HE - 27 Wide LCD Monitors - Black
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased this monitor to use specifically for gaming as my current PC monitor just wasn't fast enough for gaming. My main monitor is designed for photography, graphic design or similar uses where color accuracy is more important than speed. Before I go into detail, let me just explain why I gave four stars instead of 5. I feel perfection should be hard to get. Now back to the review. The monitor is well packaged. When I received the monitor, I first tested my PS3 games and no surprise, games look fantastic. I do not really see any ghosting which I do see in my Dell U2410. Contrast and colors look great. Blu-ray movies also looked great. I was surprised at the audio as it was louder and cleaner than I expected for a 3 watt speaker. You can not turn the bass all the way up to the highest setting because the audio starts to distort but it does provide decent bass a couple of notches down. Fortunately my monitor arrived without any dead pixels. The mesh covering the speakers are an interesting choice. Nice if you like flowers but you don't really notice it unless you are paying attention to the detail.
Now the next test was connecting it to my PC. This monitor has three inputs, two digital (HDMI) and one analog (VGA). I tried the HDMI input and no surprise, the colors don't look as great as my Dell U2410 but that is to be expected since this panel is a TN 6-bit panel. It doesn't look bad but it is definitely IPS quality. The screen is a matte screen and not glossy which helps if you work in a room with direct sunlight. Glare sucks on glossy screens and so I avoid them at all cost. Glossy screens do add more contrast but in my opinion, the contrast on this monitor looks amazing.
The monitor runs pretty cool. I used to own a Dell 30" monitor and in the summertime, it made my office get really hot. Since this monitor also has an LED panel, it should use less electricity than a traditional CCFL panel.
The game I play most often is Street Fighter IV (but in a month, that will change when Super Street Fighter IV comes out). I just love how clean and smooth it looks on this screen. There is literally no lag on this monitor. I also tried Unreal Tournament 3 on my PC and wow, the game looks terrific on this monitor. This monitor is definitely my favorite monitor for gaming.
Keep in mind that since the two digital inputs on this monitor are HDMI, you may have a problem initially when you connect your PC to this monitor as it may detect it as an HDTV instead of a PC monitor. You will need to turn off overscan correction on your graphics card settings. This will get rid of the black bars on the side of the screen
The bezel on this monitor is a bit big which means those with ATI graphics cards who want to try out Eyefinity may not want to go with this monitor.
The monitor includes a handy little remote. I am personally not a fan of the credit card sized remote controls which the Asus monitor includes as they tend to get lost easily and due to its size, you can not put a great description of what each of the buttons do. The HDTV does have a slot to hide the remote but I would have rather preferred a slightly larger remote. I sometimes forget what each symbol means but I am sure after a while, I'll get over that.
The monitor includes a 3 year warranty which is rare for computer LCD monitors. Hopefully I won't have to use it but its good to know its there if I need it.
Now for some cons. First of all, I generally like to view my Blu-ray movies at 24 frames per second since that is what movies are generally filmed at. This monitor does not support 24P, or at least when I set it to 24P on my Sony Playstation 3, it loses sync when I play a Blu-ray movie. Since this monitor came out in late 2009, I was expecting it to support 24P. Also the monitor stand can not be tilted. Since I use this as a second monitor, it doesn't line up with my Dell 24" so tilting would have been nice. For the price this monitor goes for, I was hoping it would allow tilting. The volume also does not go low enough. This is a problem because it is in my office and my walls are not thick enough and so I have to wear headphones to make sure I don't wake up my 2 year old son when he is napping. All of the buttons are on the top of the Asus monitor except for the power button. All of the HDTVs in my house have the buttons located in the same section so when I want to power on or off the Asus monitor, I sometimes accidentally reach for the top. I know this is a minor detail but I just wanted to point this out.
Overall I really like this monitor a lot and am happy with my purchase. There are some other features to this monitor which I haven't mentioned yet but its nice that it has a headphone jack for when you want to game at night when everyone in your house is asleep. It has SPDIF output for when you need thumping audio through an audio receiver or a sound bar. I don't expect I'll ever use that but its good to know its there. It is not a very portable monitor but since it doesn't weigh much, you could technically use it for lan parties and such. This monitor is a keeper and I hope it lasts me a long time. If you have any questions, feel free to comment and I will do my best to answer them. If I could give a more accurate score for this monitor, I would rate it a 4.5.

This display is excellent! Not only can I hook up my Macbook Pro, but I can also have my 360 plugged in at the same time for 1080p gaming glory! Color and contrast are great in my opinion, and I love the fact that I can adjust it however I need to, so when I slouch I can still see the screen. I give it 4 stars instead of 5 because of the touch controls that everyone else mentions. They are impossible to see without direct light, however, once you get the settings right, it's easy to memorize where the power and volume buttons are. Great display at a great price!

Samsung SyncMaster 2693HM 25.5-inch LCD Monitor

To address the previous "reviewer's" comments on this monitor. I, within the last few days, purchased the Samsung 2693HM 25.5 in. monitor, and can attest to the fact that not only are Blu-ray movies allowed to play on this monitor, they look great! Using an HDMI chord I was able to play "I Am Legend"(Blu-ray disc), through my Playstation 3, with no problem at all. Pausing the movie on Will Smith I was able to see every detail of his face, something only an HD equipped display can do with such clarity. I know also that with a little tweaking of the factory settings, I can customize it to suit my needs.
The one real gripe that I have is one that I do share with the other reviewers, concerning the menu buttons in the lower right corner of the frame. Although I do appreciate the esthetic quality of the all black frame, trying to operate, much less see the menu "buttons" is pretty frustrating. I suppose like anything though, given time one can get the hang of their operation. I just wish they were illuminated, at least while I was operating them. The good far outweighs the bad here, and I feel I made a good choice.
Aside from the ability to play Blu-ray Movies, and Playstation 3 games, I was thrilled to have this great monitor for my creative endeavors. being an artist, and a Mac person, I can really appreciate the real estate that I have to work with, with this size monitor (especially when working in Photshop, or iMovie). I originally was looking at the Apple cinema displays, but was encouraged to look into the Samsung's for getting more bang for your buck. With HDMI, and more flexibility in making adjustments to suit your needs, it seemed the clear choice. Not to mention the price.
Do yourself a favor and always trust reviews of people who have actually tried the product out or ran it through its paces. Research is key, as are more than one, or a few reviewers opinions.
Hope this helps!

Peerless SA740P Articulating LCD Wall Mount for 22-40" LCD Screens (Black) Review

Peerless SA740P Articulating LCD Wall Mount for 22-40 LCD Screens (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I purchased a 32" flat panel LCD HDTV for our bedroom and wanted to wall mount it to get it off the floor and take advantage of it's thin profile. The problem was finding decent mounting systems at our local "Big Box" electronic stores. Not to mention the high price. After a lengthy Internet search, I settled on this brand and model. We wanted to be able to move our TV to different positions (while still being fixed mounted on the wall) so we could watch it from various points in our bedroom (from the bed, from a sitting area, from the bathroom, etc). Most of the mounts I found on the Internet cost a fortune and did little more than tilt your TV up and down. This Peerless arm does so much more. It swings, swivels, and tilts to virtually any viewing angle you can imagine or need. Plus the mounting plate will fit virtually any LCD or plasma model. I suggest visiting the Peerless web site for specific information regarding compatibility with your TV brand and model.
Prices for this item were all over the board during my Internet research. I would discourage you from shopping at the lowest price sources listed at Amazon.com. I went through the long ordering process with Beach Audio.com only to find out (at the last ordering screen) that their shipping and handling costs were about twice the cost of the arm! What a deceiving rip-off. Instead, I purchased the arm through [...]. This web site has a bounty of useful information about TV and monitor mounting options. I highly recommend a look here for information, even if you don't buy from them.
I received the mount via UPS in about five days (the $9.99 shipping and handling was much more reasonable than other places). I am a "do it yourselfer" and found the installation to be easy. I think if you are even a bit mechanically inclined and have basic tools you won't have much trouble installing the unit. Find a wall stud, mark the location of the arm on the wall, drill two pilot holes into the stud, screw the arm into the wall stud with two large wood screws and screw the TV into the arm's support plate. Even if you mount the arm a bit crooked, you can still level the TV with one of the arm's adjustment screws. I highly recommend having two or more people available to help hold the TV in place while attaching it to the support arm plate.
I am very, very pleased with this articulating arm. It looks great, only sticks out about 3 inches from the wall, it has a neat system for hiding the power cord and cable wires from view, and it can be adjusted effortlessly to an infinite number of viewing angles. I was a bit leery of placing a $1000+ TV investment on a wall mount, but this unit is surprisingly strong. Even though the TV weighs a lot, the arm moves it around with very little effort.
If you are looking for a wall mounted articulating arm with lots of flexibility for TV viewing angles, this is a great, ingenious product.

Samsung SyncMaster 216BW 21.6-inch LCD Monitor Review

Samsung SyncMaster 216BW 21.6-inch LCD Monitor
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
A lot of desktop real estate at an incredibly affordable price and it looks classy too.
This is not a technical review of the product (incidentally there is very little of it at present on the internet) but wanted to share some thoughts.
I am sure like many who are considering an upgrade to their current monitor(s) will quickly find that the 22" LCD widescreen product class currently represents the best value for money. Going to a 24"+ the prices double and the smaller 19 or 20" seem to be around the same price point. Simply from that it is a no brainer that my options will be in this range. On that basis I have been researching various 22" monitors for a couple of months. I initially narrowed it down to the Acer AL2223WD (since I have an Acer already and has been completely reliable). In doing more research the Samsung SyncMaster 226BW came on top for 2 reasons. There appears to be a general consensus that the Samsung monitors are well regarded and secondly I preferred the styling of the monitor, although it came at a 25% premium over the Acer. So I have been in a holding pattern for the past couple of months to see if there would be significant movement (down) in price until I spotted the Samsung SyncMaster 216BW (released in early June 2007). At the same price point as the Acer, and only 0.4" (1 cm) smaller than the 226BW whilst still the same resolution of 1680 x 1050 the choice became clear. So I took the plunge.
As background, I was upgrading from a 17" widescreen ACER LCD (2003) and an aging SONY 15" LCD (2001), powered by a Radeon 9550. For most part the monitors were used for office work, internet browsing and watching movies. I am not a gamer so the emphasis on the response time wasn't a real concern for me. I unpacked and installed the monitor with relative ease. It really does dwarf my old monitors. I can now easily fit 2 Letter or A4 documents (full size) side by side. The monitor stand that comes with it doesn't look particularly flexible, thought I don't really have a view as I have attached the monitor to my Ergotron LX Desk Arm.
It comes with a thin manual, CD, analogue cable, DVI cable and a power cord. The power cord plugs straight into the monitor as oppose to an external box. Power input range from 100-240V, 50/60Hz, 1.0A.
When I first powered it on it was incredibly bright (Brightness on full setting of 100). With the MagicBright options I quickly changed it to the "Internet" setting which made it much easier on the eyes. There are no "dead pixels" from what I can tell which is a great relief (an irrational fear of mine with buying LCDs).
Some other points you may want to note when you do your own research.
- The 5ms response time is a Grey to Grey rating rather than a Black to Black. The 226BW quote a 2ms G-to-G.
- Also appears under the model number of SyncMaster 223BW as far as I can tell (see the Samsumg User Guide download)
- It is just a classy monitor without the other frills like speakers or USB ports
- An additional remark regarding viewing angles (having used it for a few weeks now). The Horizontal (left right) viewing angles is nothing to write home about but is completely acceptable for a computer monitor. However the Vertical (up down) viewing angle is quite poor. Not normally an issue unless you plan to use the monitor in PORTRAIT mode (i.e. rotated by 90 degrees.) If you do so then plan to use the screen dead on, otherwise its not particularly good.
Overall I am very satisfied with the monitor and hope to get many years to viewing pleasure. No issues with recommending it to anyone else who is considering one.
Update: Having used it daily for a month now, still maintain my recommendations above.
Update (Sept 07): In regards to the DVI vs Analogue cable question. Technically the DVI connection should be better, and maybe psychologically as well. Personally I have two side by side (one with DVI, other Analogue cable) which I use every day and frankly I cannot see the difference at all on every day use applications.

Hanns.G HG281DPB 28" Widescreen LCD Monitor Review

Hanns.G HG281DPB 28 Widescreen LCD Monitor
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This monitor is an amazing value (it can be found for $500).
I am a software engineer and bought this monitor for my home office.
It has a very large .309" dot pitch, which is exactly what I wanted, so text appears as large as possible at a given font size.
Not sure why some people whine about large dot pitches in monitors (and at the same time buy 50"+ TVs that naturally
come with humongous dot pitches).
This is an awesome monitor for a programmer or anyone spending a lot of time reading text.
The 1920x1200 resolution is ideal: it's more than 1080p (full HD) and doesn't need a fancy dual-link dvi graphics card. Any 32MB card can display full color at this resulotion. Unless you play 3d games, you can take full advantage of this monitor for web browsing, watching video, photo processing, presentations and so on with a $30 card.
If you go to a 30" monitor, you get a very small dot pitch (text will appear smaller) and will need a much fancier graphics card.
This page has an excellent visual presentation of how the font looks like at different dot pitches:
http://www.behardware.com/articles/658-1/lcd-tests-the-acer-and-dell-26-and-27.html
This monitor is dual input (vga and dvi/hdmi) so I've been using the VGA connection for my ubuntu linux workstation and the DVI for an apple laptop and can switch between the two from the monitor's menu buttons. Using 1920x1200 at 60hz I see no difference in quality between VGA and DVI (I was worried that VGA won't be good enough, but it is!)
The monitor has built in speakers that can be driven either by HDMI (if you hookup a DVD player for instance) or via a separate audio input. The monitor also has audio out, so you can connect better speakers (the built-in ones face backwards as they are on the backside of the monitor, so they have poor projection). They are ok for casual movie watching though.
Another thing I look for in a monitor is capability of low brightness. For a programmer, too-high brightness is a big problem. Many LCD monitor's are ridiculously bright and cannot go down to 100cd/m2 (at 100cd/m2, also called "print-level" a white screen is about as bright as holding a paper page in a well-lit room). Anything more than that is quite straining for the eyes, especially at night. Turning the brightness to 0, and the contrast to about 25, I get the "paper effect" with this monitor, although blacks are not as deep as I would like. It does better than most monitors, but not nearly as good as my older Sony 19" SDM-HX93 LCD which had an amazing backlight adjustment.

Another feature I miss is lack of presets. My old Sony had presets so with a single button I could switch from high brightness for day-time movie watching to low brightness late-night programming.
With the Hanns.G I need to go to the menus and turn down brightness and contrast (which takes about 10 key presses altogether). Not many monitors have presets though.
The only 27"/28" monitor I found that does is the Samsung 275T, but it costs double the money!
The monitor's stand is pretty good. It swivels left/right and can be tilted upwards (useful if you want to look at the screen while standing up).
My biggest gripe about the monitor is the poor vertical viewing angle. Looking down is fine, but looking up darkens things quite a bit. I like the middle of the monitor at eye-height, but this makes the top of the screen a little darker. I would have to lower the monitor so the top edge of the screen is at eye-height to avoid this problem.
There you have it. This monitor isn't quite perfect, but for the money it's a fantastic value. It's being marketed as a gaming monitor, but does a excellent job as a professional workstation monitor as well. It would also be a very good choice for anyone with poor eyesight due to the large dot pitch which makes fonts appear larger.
I would definately buy it again!
UPDATE: I discovered a way to lower the brightness in addition to the brightness/contrast controls. Go to "Color setting" in the menu, and turn down all 3 RGB colors; I set Red to 70, Green to 70 and Blue to 62. This lowers the brightness considerably, so I do not have to reduce the contrast too much to achieve the low brightness setting I am after for easy-on-the-eyes late night coding sessions.
You can take the RGB colors all the way to 0 resulting in a black screen; it's an awesome brightness adjustability!
This trick may work on other monitors too, please comment if you have the chance to try it on Samsung, LG, Viewsonic, or other monitors.

Vizio VMM26 26 Inch LCD Glass Multi Media Display Review

Vizio VMM26 26 Inch LCD Glass Multi Media Display
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I've had the monitor for a week now and am extremely happy with it. I did a lot of research before getting it at [...]. I was willing to risk it due to their return policy.
The feature list of the monitor is impressive and unmatched by anything out there. I also find that all the features work as advertised and have not been disappointed by any.
The ones that made me pick this monitor are:
- large screen (obviously)
- 16:10 screen ratio, instead of the 16:9 that is more commonly sold as widescreen. If you only watch DVDs, then maybe 16:9 works for you, but for any other computer application 16:10 gives a much better real estate.
- high resolution 1920:1200
- adjustable height!! there are very few monitors out there that offer that, and none even close in price. if you look at the 22" and 24" monitors they end up standing loo low ergonomically speaking and will make you hunch over, unless you raise them somehow. This is especially true for widescreens that tend to have a height comparable to a 17" lcd.
- built in USB hub (maybe i'll use it some day :)
- VGA, HDMI and DVI inputs (with ALL CABLES INCLUDED!!)
- sleek, modern, high-end look (for example the touch controls that disappear when not in use)
I was prepared for the following shortcomings from reading other reviews:
1. glossy, reflective screen
2. bluish color tint of the image that is difficult or even impossible to correct
I found #1 to be completely unfounded! While the screen is glossy and thus more reflective than the matte LCD screens, I compared it to about 5 other glossy monitors and 2 other laptops in the store and it was not any more reflective then those. Furthermore, in day to day use (I mean 12-14 hours a day) I don't notice it at all. In theory, if I watched movies with a lot of dark area in them, it might be noticeable, but again, it is not different than the other monitors on the market.
The real issue is #2. The blue tint is quite noticeable when you have a white window in front of you. However, I was able to correct a lot of it using the video card Gamma controls and I don't notice it anymore.
I was ready to return the monitor of these 2 issues proved to be problematic, but I am definitely keeping it. I know I would never be able to find a monitor this nice (and big) in this price range, and the blue tint issue is easy to accept.
A couple of more comments:
- tested the built in speakers, I did not notice anything worth noting compared to other built-ins. Note that if you connect with HDMI, you can get your sound that way, without connecting an audio cable. I have a nice speaker system, so I don;t plan on using them.
- the manual is useless, it does not describe the settings, and some of them are not obvious (acronyms). nevertheless, if you need a manual to set up a monitor, you have bigger problems mate
- the build quality seems very nice, everything is solid and stable.
- make sure you have desk space, especially if you buy two - I mean this thing is the same screen size as my old TV!
I highly recommend it.

Samsung SyncMaster 2253BW 22-inch LCD Monitor
Average Reviews:

First of all, great customer service from amazon.com. Ordered the unit on June 4, received it on June 6!
Pros: Easy setup and hookup. Be sure to use the DVI-I cable hookups. That's because digital input is so much better than analog. Plus, you don't mess with the buttons on the bottom right corner, except for the ON/OFF button on the far right. All your settings are configured through the video card's software interface. Download the newest driver from the Samsung website, install, and you ready to go.
Cons: DO NOT INSTALL MagicColor! It's a waste of time and conflicts with Nvidia Control Panel which causes computer lockup in some instances. (At least it did with me.) You have virtually the same settings in the Nvidia Control Panel interface. plus the panel seems a little more intuitive.
The previous reviewer did an analog setup, when every video card on the market today comes with a DVI output jack, plus just about every LCD monitor has an input jack. It just doesn't make any sense to go analog. Plus Samsung includes both cables! DVI is the only way to Fly!
Additonal Notes: Nice finsh with the piano glossy black color. The base is somewhat adjustable, but a little wobbly. I ordered the Ergotron Neo-Flex LCD desk stand to go with this monitor's VESA mount. A lot more adjustabiliity including height, much heavier weight, and it is able to rotate the entire monitor for text work.
All in all, a good spend of my money and the free shipping is always a bonus. I chose Amazon over Newegg also, since I would get free shipping on all the products I bought.

The vital consideration for a monitor is the relation between diagonal measurement of size and the number of pixels on the screen--neither one alone is enough. I've found this 27-inch monitor to be perfect for 1920 x 1200 (from a ThinkPad T61p with digital connection). A display this size needs to be further away from the eyes to see everything; I find about 30 inches from my face to be comfortable. At this distance both the Windows UI and webpage defaults produce type which is easy to read and still gets a lot of content onscreen at once. In Word, for example, it is very easy to edit two documents side by side seeing all of both full pages at the same time. In a browser it is easy to see two webpages side by side.
