This is not a technical review of the product (incidentally there is very little of it at present on the internet) but wanted to share some thoughts.
I am sure like many who are considering an upgrade to their current monitor(s) will quickly find that the 22" LCD widescreen product class currently represents the best value for money. Going to a 24"+ the prices double and the smaller 19 or 20" seem to be around the same price point. Simply from that it is a no brainer that my options will be in this range. On that basis I have been researching various 22" monitors for a couple of months. I initially narrowed it down to the Acer AL2223WD (since I have an Acer already and has been completely reliable). In doing more research the Samsung SyncMaster 226BW came on top for 2 reasons. There appears to be a general consensus that the Samsung monitors are well regarded and secondly I preferred the styling of the monitor, although it came at a 25% premium over the Acer. So I have been in a holding pattern for the past couple of months to see if there would be significant movement (down) in price until I spotted the Samsung SyncMaster 216BW (released in early June 2007). At the same price point as the Acer, and only 0.4" (1 cm) smaller than the 226BW whilst still the same resolution of 1680 x 1050 the choice became clear. So I took the plunge.
As background, I was upgrading from a 17" widescreen ACER LCD (2003) and an aging SONY 15" LCD (2001), powered by a Radeon 9550. For most part the monitors were used for office work, internet browsing and watching movies. I am not a gamer so the emphasis on the response time wasn't a real concern for me. I unpacked and installed the monitor with relative ease. It really does dwarf my old monitors. I can now easily fit 2 Letter or A4 documents (full size) side by side. The monitor stand that comes with it doesn't look particularly flexible, thought I don't really have a view as I have attached the monitor to my Ergotron LX Desk Arm.
It comes with a thin manual, CD, analogue cable, DVI cable and a power cord. The power cord plugs straight into the monitor as oppose to an external box. Power input range from 100-240V, 50/60Hz, 1.0A.
When I first powered it on it was incredibly bright (Brightness on full setting of 100). With the MagicBright options I quickly changed it to the "Internet" setting which made it much easier on the eyes. There are no "dead pixels" from what I can tell which is a great relief (an irrational fear of mine with buying LCDs).
Some other points you may want to note when you do your own research.
- The 5ms response time is a Grey to Grey rating rather than a Black to Black. The 226BW quote a 2ms G-to-G.
- Also appears under the model number of SyncMaster 223BW as far as I can tell (see the Samsumg User Guide download)
- It is just a classy monitor without the other frills like speakers or USB ports
- An additional remark regarding viewing angles (having used it for a few weeks now). The Horizontal (left right) viewing angles is nothing to write home about but is completely acceptable for a computer monitor. However the Vertical (up down) viewing angle is quite poor. Not normally an issue unless you plan to use the monitor in PORTRAIT mode (i.e. rotated by 90 degrees.) If you do so then plan to use the screen dead on, otherwise its not particularly good.
Overall I am very satisfied with the monitor and hope to get many years to viewing pleasure. No issues with recommending it to anyone else who is considering one.
Update: Having used it daily for a month now, still maintain my recommendations above.
Update (Sept 07): In regards to the DVI vs Analogue cable question. Technically the DVI connection should be better, and maybe psychologically as well. Personally I have two side by side (one with DVI, other Analogue cable) which I use every day and frankly I cannot see the difference at all on every day use applications.

Pros: Easy setup and hookup. Be sure to use the DVI-I cable hookups. That's because digital input is so much better than analog. Plus, you don't mess with the buttons on the bottom right corner, except for the ON/OFF button on the far right. All your settings are configured through the video card's software interface. Download the newest driver from the Samsung website, install, and you ready to go.
Cons: DO NOT INSTALL MagicColor! It's a waste of time and conflicts with Nvidia Control Panel which causes computer lockup in some instances. (At least it did with me.) You have virtually the same settings in the Nvidia Control Panel interface. plus the panel seems a little more intuitive.
The previous reviewer did an analog setup, when every video card on the market today comes with a DVI output jack, plus just about every LCD monitor has an input jack. It just doesn't make any sense to go analog. Plus Samsung includes both cables! DVI is the only way to Fly!
Additonal Notes: Nice finsh with the piano glossy black color. The base is somewhat adjustable, but a little wobbly. I ordered the Ergotron Neo-Flex LCD desk stand to go with this monitor's VESA mount. A lot more adjustabiliity including height, much heavier weight, and it is able to rotate the entire monitor for text work.
All in all, a good spend of my money and the free shipping is always a bonus. I chose Amazon over Newegg also, since I would get free shipping on all the products I bought.

The model number on the manual is(VO22L 10A) I'm not having any of the problems that the other reviewer is having like the slow channel or the small font on the channel display. I bought my first Vizio three years ago and have bought two more for the other rooms. None of them have given me any problems yet. Is it possible that there is something in the setup on his/her dish/cable receiver that could be causing this?
Remember, if your TV is acting strange, there is a real good possibility that you are in need of proper setup. With all of the options in dish receiver and TV setups these days, it's really easy to have something on the wrong setting.
One easy way to find out is to hook up a good old fashioned set of rabit ears and run your TV's channel set-up. If your television doesn't find digital channels, move the antenna or TV into another room and try it again. My experience is that location within the house is far more important than the quality of the antenna when receiving HDTV signals over the air. A lot of these TVs won't tune into a channel unless it has previously found it during setup... even if you manually punch in the channel number!
Once your TV has successfully found the digital channels during setup, try moving the TV back to the location where you want it. There is a good chance that your TV will be able to pull in the signal. Be patient and experiment with different locations.

(More customer reviews)I am really happy with the purchase of this monitor. I haven't seen too many reviews on it, so I was bit skeptical at first when purchasing it. It is the perfect size, 5ms response time, HDCP compliant, 16:9, and has a 20000:1 contrast ratio. One of the things about monitors in this size is the 16:9 viewing ratio - Some are not, and if you are interested in watching HDTV on your monitor then you'll have black bars at the top and bottom of the screen, which I personally don't like. Pairs well with a Blu-ray player and HDCP compliant video card. I'm using it for all sorts of tasks - video and picture editing, blu-ray movies, internet, etc. I'm not a gamer so I can't comment on that end of it. All in all, a great value for the size and quality.
One note on the stand assembly: Use a bit of olive oil and place it around the rubber ring on the inside of the stand insert. This helps the stand slide into place much more easily, and will not hurt the monitor as long as you use the olive oil sparingly.

(More customer reviews)One of the crazes of 2006-2007 seems to be monitors, and many people seem to get specs-crazy. For good reason though - who wants to spend hundreds of dollars on a piece of bad hardware? I'll attempt to cover most of the major topics people are worried about.Panel Technology:
Definitely a TN Panel. At the time of this review, most 22" panels are manufactured by Chimei, which I believe is a Taiwanese company. The ramped up production of the Dell 22" may change that, but until then... So, how do I know this is a TN (twisted neumatic) panel? Well, mainly by the response time - at this price point, it's going to be a TN. TN panels are the cheapest, and are the most used consumer panels. They have fast response times. However, they are 6-bit, compared to 8-bit. This means there are fewer colors, and the colors will also be less accurate than a non-TN panels. It also means some banding. If you're not doing graphic design, etc, then you won't have to worry about it. Word documents and Excel spreadsheets aren't going to present the opportunities to complain about the subtle color differences and gradient banding. If you are a graphics pro, gamer with good eyes, etc., then go for a panel with S-IPS technology. PVA panels also work, with accurate colors and great contrast ratios, but they have slower response rates. In general, S-IPS and PVA are also noticeably more expensive than TNs.Banding
Even though there are a lot of TN panels out there, they all have different banding levels. The Samsung 225BW performs very well, with minimal banding. On VGA, there is barely noticeable banding, but the monitor works a lot better on DVI input: banding is barely noticeable. I literally have to put my face to the monitor to find it.Backlight Bleeding
This is a general problem on the 22 inch TN panels. There is backlight bleeding on the top and bottom, but it's not too bad, and only noticeable if you make the screen entirely black. Usually, your taskbar covers the bottom, and an open application will cover the the entire screen, not to mention the top of the screen. But if it bothers you, then the bleeding IS there, and noticeable on a black screen.Response Time
Response time on all TN panels will be lower, as that is a feature of the technology. However, the 5ms is measured grey-to-grey. The response times between black and white are unlisted. Generally, they are higher. Overall, the Samsung 225BW performs pretty well in gaming and movie tests.Stand Construction
One of the main reasons you would buy a Samsung is 1) Better Quality Control and 2) Stand Construction. The stand looks durable, unlike many of the flimsy/cheap looking stands out there. This stand pivots, twists, and has height adjustment. All that it is lacking is portrait/landscape rotation.Connectivity
Has VGA and DVI. Simply said, DVI looks better than VGA, and eliminates much of the banding, color image quality issues, and flickering text (on black background) that are present in VGA connection. If you don't have DVI already, that usually means getting a dock/port replicator for a laptop, and probably a new video card for a desktop.On Board Controls + Brightness + Contrast + More
I notice that many readers complain about brightness - not just in this monitor - but in many other monitors. Contrast is also related to this. I noticed that the older population generally wants a panel that's less dim. For example, I noticed that on the HP f2105 reviews, many people said that the default was brightness was too high, though I thought it was perfect. The hard button settings work as they should; I generally don't bother going through the settings, and most people won't need to. Brightness is adequate; contrast is very good; on the contrast scale of 0 to 255, even blacks at level 1 are noticeable on a pitch black background. Resolution:
Text is clear and crisp; no fuzzy areas. My monitor came without any dead or stuck pixels, which I partially attribute to Samsung's better quality control (though it's not perfect). Much better than lesser-known brands, for sure. Also, I recommend buying the monitor from Amazon because there's no fee to restock, as other stores have. 15% is a pretty big cut for a restocking fee. Also, other stores have dead pixel policies that generally allows for 5-8 dead pixels. Personally, one dead pixel bothers me. I couldn't imagine trying to live with 8! Amazon is great for this because they don't seem to have a dead pixel policy. The customer service representatives I've spoken to don't even know what dead pixels are! (Sorry, Amazon CSRs). Thus, monitors with even 1 stuck pixel can be exchanged as defective, as they really are.Other Options:
A 20" LCD. They have the same 1680x1050 resolution as this 22", which means you won't be seeing any more on the bigger monitor - it'll just look bigger. The advantage of 20" monitors are that they are cheaper. Examples of good 20" LCDs are the Viewsonic VX2025wm and the Samsung 204BW/205BW. The HP f2105 is a good 21" monitor for a decent price. It has either a PVA or S-PVA screen, which looks a lot better: no backlight bleeding, full 8-bit color. Expect to spend around $250 for a 20", and $300-400 for a 22"
A 23"+ LCD. In contrast, 23" and larger LCDs have higher resolution (1920x1200), but are more expensive. They are a lot more beautiful though. =) Examples of good 1920x1200 monitors are the Dell 2407WFP, the Apple 23" Cinema Display, the Samsung 244T, and the BenQ FP241W. Expect to spend $650+ for a 23-24". There are also 26" and 27" monitors out there with this same resolution. They are a bit more expensive.
A 30" LCD! The Apple 30" Cinema Display (expensive), and the Dell 3007WFP (cheaper but still pretty good) are simply amazing. Be warned that you'll need dual-link DVI. They run at 2550x1600 resolution though, which is amazing. Price? Anywhere from $1200-$2000.
And of course, another 22" LCD. The Viewsonic VX2235wm, the Viewsonic VG2230wm, the Acer AL2216WBD, and the Acer AL2223WBD are decent 22" LCDs for around $300.
OLED panels. Displayed by Sony at CES 2007, these panels are amazingly beautiful, have contrast ratios a thousand times higher than LCD monitors, and are amazingly thin. No word on pricing or availability at the time of this review.
Feel free to comment on this review if you find incorrect information, have comments, questions, etc. By no means do I guarantee the perfect accuracy of my information. Keep in mind that panels vary in construction; your 225BW might be better or worse than mine. Also, monitor companies do change panel manufacturers; so you panel purchased a year ago or a year later may have different specs from mine. Example, the Dell 1907WFP switched to TN panels in late 2006 (unfortunately).

(More customer reviews)It isn't the design of this LCD that earns merit, although it is a rather timeless looking item and will look smart in any situation. It's the feature set, and there is certainly far more function over form than meets the casual eye!
Pros:
- Can be set to auto detect the exact input source resolution and display the image without any stretching. This is great if you play games that might need 1280 x 1024 or 1680 x 1050. Your treasured vintage game collection will still look splendid!
- Has a great software tool that will set the correct color / contrast / brightness balance. Make sure you run MagicBright after installation - the image is stellar once you have this set.
- Low power consumption - do your bit for Gaia ;-)
- The memory resident tools do not task the CPU.
- Tack sharp display with almost non-existant light bleed at the edges
- Games look superb!
- No dead pixels
- Comfortable viewing size - I find larger displays somewhat taxing on the eyes
- Has a great tool that can divide your display into various logical units - a bit mike having multiple displays - very cool as this makes apps snap into the regions just like extra displays
- Amazing price - 2ms + 20,000:1 contrast ratio + Samsung quality + auto resolution detect + much more!
Cons:
- No height adjustment - but by no means a show-stopper when you bear in mind the spec.
- Tilt only tilts away, not towards you. The assumption is that you will be looking down at the screen up to horizontal, which is ergonomically incorrect. The user should have the option to view at 90 degrees or above to avoid neck strain. I resolved this by buying a sturdy stand so I can have the mid-screen point at eye level ;-)
- No frame color options - just translucent burgundy, which looks blackish most of the time in low light conditions.
- Software installation is confusing. It recommends that you download the latest software. When you click the link, it's very unclear what you need to do. I couldn't see a option for the T220, so I just installed what was on the disk and everything ran fine. You must run the software installer using Internet Explorer, otherwise you need to manually run the install exe from the CD.

If you are into games then you know what a fast response time means. It means less video tearing and faster black to black. My last monitor was 8ms and I thought that it was perfect. Samsung B2230 22-Inch Widescreen LCD Monitor - Glossy Black Review

(More customer reviews)I recently purchased the Samsung B2230 to replace an old 19 inch Samsung monitor. I thought the older monitor looked great but this one is fantastic. The colors are more vibrant and it is a 16:9 aspect ratio compared to the older 16:10. This means that most widescreen movies no longer have the black bars on the top and bottom.
The controls are touch sensitive and took a while for me to get used to but are easy to get used to. The older model I had to reach underneath to hit the buttons and for the B2230 I have to use my finger on the labeled menu itself right below the Samsung logo. The monitor is gorgeous with its all black design with 1 blue light to show that its on. The monitor can reach full 1080p with a 1920 x 1080 native resolution. It does lack a HDMI input and only has a DVI and VGA input but for $170.00 this 21.5" monitor is a steal I am very happy with this purchase.

(More customer reviews)I ordered this TV on Thanksgiving night 2008 from OfficeMax. I had it sent to my dorm in Berkeley. This TV totally does its job. It acts as a great second monitor and as a great TV. The local HD channels look great on this thing (when I have my antenna properly adjusted). I also use it to play my Wii games. Using component cables, this TV excellently converts the 480p video output from my Wii to match the 1080p resolution of the screen, the video does not feel laggy or grainy. Also it remembers whether you prefer 4:3 or 16:9 for you SD TV viewing, so you don't have to keep resetting your preference each time you start it up like on lower-quality TVs
(side note: I don't know how anyone can stand to watch SDTV stretched to 16:9 when it is meant to be 4:3, it makes everyone look short and fat)
The only con I can see with this TV is that it lacks composite and S-Video inputs. The DVI, VGA, and 2 HDMI inputs are great, but that lack of a second component input or any composite inputs makes it difficult to use multiple non-HD devices on it.
I strongly recommend this TV.
