Toshiba DVR660 1080p Upconverting VHS DVD Recorder with Built-in Tuner Review

Toshiba DVR660 1080p Upconverting VHS DVD Recorder with Built-in Tuner
Average Reviews:

I have a Samsung digital TV (1080p), and with my new Toshiba DVR660 and an HDMI cable, I can turn HD programming into sharp DVD's that appear to match my 1080p picture pixel for pixel. (In actuality, the DVR660 records it to 480p and then upconverts it back to 1080p.) By the way, I get all my programming from a portable antenna, and the DVD recorder has an excellent HD tuner.
The VCR is adequate, giving me the same picture quality as the SONY which preceeded it. After seeing how easy it was to make a DVD recording, and how fabulous the results, I realized that I would never make a VCR recording again. It did an excellent job dubbing a VCR tape to a DVD.
Although I am not a computer programmer like the "Man from Happy Rock", who found it so difficult to use, I found that the machine was not so difficult to use at all, as long as you followed the instructions. One of the major complaints from Mr. Happy Rock was that the machine turns itself off after you use the "set timer" button. My brother, who IS a computer programmer, said that his Magnavox also turns itself off when you use the "set timer" function and that they all do this. He also said it took him 2 years to master his Magnavox!
I did have a couple questions the first day, and I called the Toshiba telephone number given for DVD recorders. My call was answered by a real person with an American accent within 30 seconds. She answered all my questions easily.
Before I purchased this recorder, I spent hours reading and re-reading the reviews for like products made by Sony, Samsung, Panisonic, JVC, Philips, etc. All the other products seemed to have fatal flaws, so I made the decision for Toshiba. I'm glad I did.

I agree with most of the posts here about the garbage that is the HR20, but it has improved greatly since October. Nevertheless, it si so unreliable that I had to get DirecTV to re-connect my 5 year old TiVo (for free) to catch all the programs this thing misses. They have sent out numerous updates, but it seems that they are spending more time enabling features to make the thing appear to be better than TiVo rather than addressing basic recording (that's what a DVR is for right?). It is like a high end car with an awesome stereo, and brakes that don't work. I nearly left DirecTV over this thing, and I've been with them since 1995!

Artec T14ar Tv Receiver Digital Mini Usb2.0 Antenna Remote Review

Artec T14ar Tv Receiver Digital Mini Usb2.0 Antenna Remote
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Artec T14A is a useful product and impressive for its combination of low price and compact form. It is well suited for TV viewing on a notebook computer. You can easily slip this tuner plus its antenna into a notebook computer bag. However, if you are looking for an HDTV for everyday TV viewing, or to use your computer as a digital TV recorder, this product may prove to be inadequate.
When the signal is tuned in, the picture quality is excellent, just as expected for any HDTV tuner. However, you might encounter pauses or lags in the image updates, due to performance limits on your computer, or poor signal reception at your location or poor antenna positioning. When using the provided compact antenna, be prepared to finesse the antenna into the best position for reception. You can alternatively connect the antenna of your choice to the standard coax input connector.
I have used the Artec T14A for the past 3 months with my Dell E1505 (1.6GHz Duo Core, 1GB RAM) laptop, running Windows XP MCE. It comes with a CD for installing an ATSC Digital TV application. I used this application to scan for TV channels and to view the TV. When running, it consumed roughly 40% of the processor bandwidth.
It is easy enough to view the TV in full-screen mode, or in a window next to other windows on the screen. You can let it run in the background or side-by-side with a web browser, for example.
This product will not by itself connect with the Windows XP Media Center Edition (MCE) features; MCE requires that an analog tuner be in use, and then purportedly this HDTV tuner can also be used in conjunction with MCE. On my laptop I decided to give up on using MCE to control the TV and just used the Artec-provided Digital TV software for viewing.
Update - May 2008 - Be sure to check out the latest alternatives, including the Hauppauge.

I bought this unit to get an ATSC tuner cheap and to be able to record shows. Well, it kind of works, but nothing is great. The remote control is terrible. Its credit card sized and gets lost real easy. It also doesn't control much. The television guide is generic and comes from (...). You have to sign in and scroll on the internet with your mouse which is a nuisance to me because it should work with the remote, but it doesn't. You can't even click on a show and go to it. The remote control has to be directly in front of the box to work, also. This unit is cheap and you get what you pay for. I thought it would pause and rewind live TV, but it won't for me. There are so much better products than this out there so pay a little more and be much happier.

USB ATSC/QAM Digital Cable HDTV Tuner For Laptop and Desktop/Digital Video Recorder
Good idea with this product, decent design, the software is really slow and could use some work (computer is brand new and does everything else very fast) the remote that came with it does not work at all, but you can use the on-screen buttons just as easily. The antenna that comes with it seems to work ok but i tried a larger self powered antenna on it and all i got was static on every tv station, havent tried the cable settings yet, the FM radio works, just be sure you close the program out completely before unplugging this unit from the USB port, or it will cause ur system to crash about 1/4 of the time and freeze up the other 3/4 of the time.. all in all, i will continue to use it until it no longer works but i wont buy another one or recomend it to friends

Samsung SIR-T351 ATSC (HD) Tuner Review

Samsung SIR-T351 ATSC (HD) Tuner
Average Reviews:

Apart from it's clumsy primitive user interface, this unit has two tragic flaws:
1 - The on screen displays (program guide, info screen, setup menus, channel display, etc.) do not work when using the DVI port when the resolution is set to 1080i!! You're totally flying blind, with no visual way to set or confirm settings or channels. Samsung has confirmed that it is designed this way, but could offer no explanation why! This reason alone is enough to stay away from this model.
2 - The Dolby Digital implementation doesn't work correctly. When using the optical or coaxial digital output, while set to Dolby Digital output, the audio drops out repeatedly and constantly. It will usually work fine for a few minutes, then it starts cutting in and out. Changing channels will clear it up for a few more minutes, but the problem quickly returns. The only way to get functioning digital audio is to set it to PCM, but then of course you can't decode Dolby 5.1 broadcasts. Samsung has confirmed this design flaw, but offers no solution.
Check with www.avsforum.com, and you'll find countless pissed off Samsung owners. Go with a unit from Zenith, LG or Motorola, you'll be much happier.

Samsung SIR-T151 HDTV Receiver with Dolby Digital DTV Decoder Review

Samsung SIR-T151 HDTV Receiver with Dolby Digital DTV Decoder
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
An elegant solution that works very well. While perfectly suited for HDTV-ready sets, I've been using it with a standard 4:3 non-HDTV Sony. If you have a TV with composite, component, or s-video inputs, this thing will work, assuming you can receive digital signals over the air. For HDTV purposes, it must be amazing.
In fact, I don't know why more people don't buy these things to watch PERFECT digital TV from free over-the-air signals--even on standard TVs. (Of course, not all cities are broadcasting all their channels in digital, but many are ...) Even at 480p (the unit's lowest resolution) the video is DVD-quality. Try switching between ... analog cable and OTA digital--the difference is stunning. Again, even on a standard TV.
Easy, intuitive menus. Many different output options for video AND audio. Overall, an excellent investment: Use it now with a standard TV, use it later with an HDTV-ready set.

Samsung DVD-HD931 HDTV Converter Progressive-Scan DVD Player Review

Samsung DVD-HD931 HDTV Converter Progressive-Scan DVD Player
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Hopefully you're reading this review to try and find out whether the HD quality DVI output is really that good.
If you're in a hurry, I'll summarize by saying that it really is the best quality video output that you can get today from a DVD player. But it would not make sense to leave it at that, especially when the other DVD players cost at least a 100 bucks less. I for one decided to do a test. I compared this Samsung HD931 player against a Sony DVP-NS725P (in my opinion, one of the best less-expensive, non-DVI output players). I chose the Sony because it's one of the few progressive scan players that have a 12-bit 108MHz Video DAC (Digital to Analog converter) - most others have a 10-bit 54MHz Video DAC. As I write this review, the Samsung cost around $229 while the Sony cost around $129.
So how did these 2 players compare? First off, I chose the best video output from each player. Obviously for the Samsung HD931, this is the DVI output (and I ran it at 720p as well as 1080i). As for the Sony NS725P, it was the component output running at 480p. Also, I tested with many DVD movies, not just one. And finally, my TV is a 50" Samsung DLP HDTV - great TV, but with such large and high clarity TVs you tend to notice any artifact, noise, etc. So the input to this TV is important (that's what got me started on this quest for a good DVD player in the first place!). The bottom line is this: With most DVDs (such as 'Finding Nemo', 'Indiana Jones', etc.), I noticed a difference - the Samsung HD931 produced a picture that was better than the Sony NS725P. But how much better exactly? Well, I wish I had a tool for measuring that, but I don't. So with my human perception I'd say that on a scale of 1 to 10 (10 being the best), the Samsung HD931 scored a 9 while the Sony NS725P scored a close 8. When the DVD movie was of low quality (such as a backup of a movie), the score was even at around 7 each. In other words, there seemed to be no difference in the case of low quality DVDs (surprising, I'd have thought the Samsung would have done better here).
I don't want to make this review too big, so I'll summarize the pros and cons of this Samsung HD931 player.
Pros:
1) Definitely high quality DVI output - I used the DVI cable that came with the box. No noise problems, no setup problems, nothing. You do have to remember to select 480p or 720p or 1080i. I seemed to get the best picture with 720p, but 1080i seemed almost the same really.
2) DVI cable was included - I'm mentioning this again because it is a big deal, given how expensive these cables can be. However, I noticed that some boxes at Best Buy said 'DVI cable included', while some did NOT. So, do all HD931 boxes include the cable? I don't know.
Cons:
1) The price - it really has to come down.
2) The remote. Others have said it too - it really has very small range. If you're more than 6 feet way, you'll have problems. Also, there's only one Fast Fordward (>>) button that doubles as chapter forward as well as fast forward. If you press it once, it goes to the next chapter. If you press and hold, it'll fast forward. Same thing for Rewind (search backwards). Not a good design.
3) The blue lights - Yes, that's plural. There are 2 big, annoying ones. When the unit is in standby, the round knob all the way in the left lights up. This is the smaller of the 2 lights. When you power up, the big round knob all the way to the right (jog dial) lights up. This one is more annoying since it's big and very bright. You can only make the display dim, but not either of these 2 lights.
4) Audio output not that great - I hooked up the optical digital out to my Denon Receiver. The bass was sub-par. The surround sound channels seemed weaker too. When I hooked up the Sony player (NS725P) with the exact same receiver settings, the sound was awesome. Of course, the Sony player is noted for it's high quality sound output. So maybe that's more of a statement for the Sony player than for this Samsung player.
5) Lack of special features - E.g. The Sony player can remember the location of the last 5 DVD movies you've played. This Samsung player didn't seem to always remember even the most recent one I was playing. Also, you cannot make any picture adjustments (noise filtering, film mode, cinema mode, etc.) All these and more were available with the Sony NS725P that cost much less.
To summarize (again) - this Samsung HD931 is capable of producing one of the best quality pictures using the DVI output. But for all the lack of features described above, I would not recommend buying it. Especially if the price stays so much higher than the other players which certainly do a good job with Video as well (not as good, but close enough). I ended up returning the Samsung HD931 and keeping the Sony DVP-NS725P. I plan to buy a good quality VCR with the $100 I saved.

Samsung's DVD-HD931 aims to redefine DVD picture quality, using high technology to upconvert DVD-Video images to resolutions better suited for today's high-definition displays (720p/1080i). Even if you're planning to upgrade your television at a later date, this player will work with your current set and all commercial DVD-Video media, as well as your homemade MP3/WMA music CDs, Picture CDs, and CDs filled with JPEG image files.
Standard DVD players output 480i (interlaced) video. Progressive-scan players roughly double that resolution by outputting 480p (progressive scan) video. Progressive scanning, referred to as 480p for the number of horizontal lines that compose the video image, creates a picture using twice the scan lines of a conventional DVD picture, providing higher resolution and sharper images while eliminating nearly all motion artifacts. The DVD-HD931's 480p output can be sent via a dedicated DVI (digital visual interface) output or the more traditional component-video outputs.
The DVD-HD931 also performs 3:2 pulldown. DVD mastering introduces a common distortion when adjusting 24-frames-per-second movies to 30 fps video; 3:2 pulldown digitally corrects this distortion, removing the redundant information to display a film-frame-accurate picture. Faroudja's de-interlacing technology (DCDi) is built into the device, performing directional interpolation--detecting the angle of a pixel's outer tilt--on each pixel. Video signals are de-interlaced according to that angle, thereby correcting image vibration, stair-stepping, cut-off, and other common video-processing artifacts.
Two sets of left/right analog-audio outputs channel audio to Dolby Pro Logic receivers and stereo televisions. Both Dolby Digital and DTS 5.1-channel surround-sound signals can be routed through the player's digital-audio outputs (one each of RCA coaxial and Toslink optical) for direct connection to a full-featured audio/video receiver. If you don't have a surround receiver or six-channel speaker setup, you can still make every movie night the ultimate experience: the unit's 3-D Sound function simulates surround sound through two speakers (even the stereo speakers on a TV).
Other features include EZ View letter box eliminator (which adapts widescreen images for 4:3 aspect-ratio TV sets), motion zoom (which magnifies selected screen areas by 2x or 4x), instant replay/skip (which initiates a 10-second jump backward or forward), and bookmarking (which lets you mark sections of a disc for rapid access).
Three keys to high-quality pictures

Samsung SIR-T165 HDTV Terrestrial Receiver Review

Samsung SIR-T165 HDTV Terrestrial Receiver
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is currently the top-of-the-line product in its category (HDTV receivers). It has three capabilities of interest:
(1) reception of digital over-the-air television broadcasts
(2) scaling of VCR, DVD, satellite, or cable signals to either HDTV 720p or 1080i
(3) FireWire output and recording control to D-VHS VCR
The first capability (reception) is well-implemented. The receiver was able to pick up all the digital channels in my area (not to mention the legacy analog channels) through its auto-detection capability, and provided a channel list editor to allow me to knock out the channels I didn't want, such as analog channels that duplicated digital channels, home shopping channels, and analog channels where the reception was too poor to be of interest. For the digital channels, it also includes a signal strength meter, which is useful for finding the best antenna position and angle. Overall, as a digital broadcast receiver, I found nothing to fault in this product. Before buying, however, you should do research to determine what digital channels are currently available in your area. The web site ...is excellent for this purpose, showing not only what channels are available, but also those that are scheduled for future availability, and finally the signal direction and strength. It may seem strange to go back to over-the-air reception, especially after satellite and cable have made picture quality such a selling point, but digital over-the-air television, even for non-HDTV programming, has better picture and sound quality than cable or satellite (including digital cable and satellite - both over-compress their signals to squeeze in more channels and degrade picture quality), and its free. As for the HDTV programming, well, its just the best quality picture available - much better than even DVD
The second capability (scaling) is an attractive bonus capability. The receiver can scale from 480i, 480p, 720p, or 1080i to either 720p or 1080i, the two standard HDTV resolutions, and output them to either RGB, component, or DVI. What's interesting about this is that it can do it not only for the broadcasts it receives, but for video signals from other sources such as VCR's, DVD's, satellite, or cable, through either compositve, S-Video, or component inputs. The quality of the scaler is quite good; by running my other sources through the receiver, I get better picture quality for all of them than I did by running them directly to the television. For 4:3 source material, it supports full (for anamorphic sources) conversion, zoom ( for letterbox sources) conversion, and letterbox (centered with sidebars). My only gripe is that the sidebars it adds are gray. Now for some types of televisions (CRT, plasma) gray bars are useful for avoiding picture burn-in (uneven where to the display). But for other types of televisions (LCD, DLP) burn in is not an issue and gray bars serve no purpose. The receiver should have included an option to replace the gray bars with black. That said, for me the scaler alone would have justified the price.
The third capability, D-VHS recording control, works, but just barely. There are quite a few issues here: (1) FireWire recording ties up the device; you can't watch one program while recording another, which precludes use of the scaler while recording. (2) The timed recording feature does not support repeated events - it can't be programmed to record every Tuesday at 10:00; it has to be re-set for each individual recording, (3) the timed recording feature only works if the receiver is turned off - if the receiver is accidently left on, the recording will fail, (4) the timer depends on the time broadcast by the stations themselves - it can't be set manually - and many stations do not bother to broadcast the correct time (I have been trying to get the stations in my area to fix their time broadcasts, and have had some success). With regard to compatibility, I have the JVC HM-DH3000L D-VHS deck and have not had any inter-operability problems. Over the FireWire connection I could control, record, and play back digital video and audio successfully and without loss of picture quality.
Product ease of use varies with the features used. The reception capability is pretty simple. Anyone who can hook up a VCR or cable box to their television should be able to hook this up to their television. The scaler capability is a little harder to use, but probably within the reach of a lot of people. The D-VHS recording capability is not particularly easy to get working; unless you are into home theater, you shouldn't try it; there are just too many limitations in the current generation of hardware.

Average Reviews:

My ts360 is great; there are lots of features in the menus to customize your use and appearance of the guide. I use mine solely as an OTA receiver, and bought it second-hand. There were a few issues...
The first was, since it was stored away for a while by original owner, it would not power up right away. There was a constant clicking noise; no display. After letting it click away for a few hours, it came back to life. Then a "boot fail" error on the display. You can still bypass this by pressing 'select' to get to the menu to choose "no dish". The receiver resets itself, then works like a charm. I was so happy to get all my local digital/hd channels. BTW, both problems were solved by a little 'googling.'
The ts360 is easy to use, and the guide still provides you with almost all the info (times, descriptions, etc.) on programs found on the digital subchannels (18.1, 24.1, etc.). I've had no problems with it ever since I revived it.

This lets you optimize performance by matching the output to your digital television monitor's native resolution, whether you're using a plasma-, LCD-, DLP-, or CRT-based set. Additionally, the SIR-TS360 simultaneously outputs standard 480i composite-video, allowing a dual connection with an analog TV or standard VCR.A full complement of audio/video inputs and outputs accommodate current and future devices. The unit offers 1 each composite-video, component-video, and S-video inputs.Samsung makes an optional RF remote (model SRC-S401RF/A) as well. You can use an RF remote jack and cable to operate the receiver when it's installed in a cabinet or in another room in your house. What's in the Box DirecTV receiver/HDTV tuner, 1 universal remote control (5-device), remote batteries, 1 conditional access card, 1 owner's manual, 1 phone cable, 1 A/V (RCA) cable, 1 S-video cable, 1 component-video cable, 1 VCR control cable.Note: A continuous land-based phone line connection is required for DirecTV Pay Per View functionality and DirecTV subscriptions. Any calls generated by the DirecTV HD Receiver are toll free. These calls are typically made in the middle of the night; your phone is in use for approximately 30 seconds. Whenever possible you should connect both HD and SD interfaces to permit SD viewing of programs if HD viewing is restricted due to copyright restrictions.

Samsung DTBH260F HDTV Terrestrial Receiver Review

This item has been hard to find in stores and online. After being waitlisted with Amazon for some time, I finally ordered it from another large electronics vendor that offerred free shipping, but I had to pay sales tax.
Last year I purchased two HDTV's (without built in tuners) thinking I would always get HD from my cable company. When I totaled up the cost of HD on cable with all of the extra boxes and fees, over-the-air HD for the price of a tuner seemed like a much more reasonable alternative.
The tuner was not difficult to hook up. I used an inexpensive HDMI cable (purchased off the web), regular rabbit ears/UHF antenna and plugged the tuner directly into my TV. (Remember to flip the switch on the back of the unit and to set your TV to HDMI input.) According to the manual, audio is supposed to be transmitted to the TV through the HDMI cable, but my TV does not accept dolby 5.1 surround sound. I had to change the audio setting on the unit to PCM to get sound out of the TV. Alternatively, I got stereo sound by running separate audio cables (included with the unit) to my home theater unit.
Being at an age where I grew up with over the air TV and recalling that we continually had to adjust the rabbit ears to improve the picture, I was astounded by the quality of the signal. The transmission towers are about 19 miles away and I was getting all bars on the signal strength. No fidgiting with the rabbit ears was required and the picture has no ghosting. Clearly, this is not the over the air TV of the 60's and 70's.
In addition to the HD shows, I'm also getting a 720 digital signal on most of the non-HD programming, which is a big improvement over the 480 analog. The improvement is so good, I'm thinking of getting another tuner for my other hd-ready TV.
I do have a couple of small complaints. As noted by other reviewers, the channels seem to change very slowly using the remote and you need very good aim. And, don't lose the remote because you cannot change the channel without it. Another reviewer noted that it takes a bit of time for the unit to boot up when first turned on, which I can also confirm. He also noted that the unit gets very hot, which is NOT my experience.
Happy viewing!

PROS: Kinda surprised that I'm the first person to write a review for this great 19" HDTV from Samsung. I guess 19" (actually, 18.5") monitors are not all that popular as they're generally too small for anything but a smallish space. In my case, I use it in my office adjacent to a pair of Samsung 2233 21.5" monitors that my wife and I use.
The 933HD+ is a great little HDTV/Monitor that's just perfect for the space I have. The colors are vibrant (I'm using an HDMI connection from my Comcast cable box) and the refresh rate is fine for football games and other high-motion broadcasts. The speakers are another matter (see below) but I bought this monitor for its picture, not for its sound. I've also used the analog D-SUB connector to hook this up to my computer as a second monitor (with a digital DVI connection going to the Samsung 2233SW). Works great for Netflix streams! The screw-in monitor stand was trivially easy to attach. Overall, a great small HDTV at a great price.
CONS: The biggest issue with this monitor is the underwhelming speakers. There just isn't much low end from the stock, tinny speakers. I knew this in advance and my solution is to just use a an extra set of Boston Acoustics computer speakers (along with a sub-woffer) using the headphone out 3.5mm jack on the back of the TV. Now it sounds great! The remote works, but it is hardly an icon of sleek design. Another gripe has to do with the Ultra-Mega shiney black finish. The finish is so polished that it reflects everything. Right now, I can see the reflection from all the Christmas lights in my house, and frankly I find this somewhat annoying. A matte-black finish would have been MUCH, MUCH better. Also, this things shows off fingerprints and dust like there's no tomorrow. Also noticed that depending on the viewing angle, the color vibrance and brightness can vary pretty significantly. This is the case with all LCD monitors, not just this one. But no big deal-breakers here.
OVERALL: For the price, I don't think there's a better value out there. The cons I noted have *nothing* to do with the performance of the monitor, either. Rather, they are cosmetic issues that are totally ignorable. I wish there were some after-market height-adjustable stands that attached to the base on these monitors. I find them to be just a little too low to the table for my tastes. Maybe Samsung will offer something like this as as accessory down the road (assuming they standardize on this screw-on based for all monitors/HDTV's in this class). The buttons on the side of the monitor are hard to use, but thankfully you don't need to interact with them very much -- set 'em once, then forget about 'em.

Samsung SyncMaster 2333HD HDTV Widescreen LCD Monitor (Glossy Black) Review

I ordered this TV on Thanksgiving night 2008 from OfficeMax. I had it sent to my dorm in Berkeley. This TV totally does its job. It acts as a great second monitor and as a great TV. The local HD channels look great on this thing (when I have my antenna properly adjusted). I also use it to play my Wii games. Using component cables, this TV excellently converts the 480p video output from my Wii to match the 1080p resolution of the screen, the video does not feel laggy or grainy. Also it remembers whether you prefer 4:3 or 16:9 for you SD TV viewing, so you don't have to keep resetting your preference each time you start it up like on lower-quality TVs
(side note: I don't know how anyone can stand to watch SDTV stretched to 16:9 when it is meant to be 4:3, it makes everyone look short and fat)
The only con I can see with this TV is that it lacks composite and S-Video inputs. The DVI, VGA, and 2 HDMI inputs are great, but that lack of a second component input or any composite inputs makes it difficult to use multiple non-HD devices on it.
I strongly recommend this TV.
