(More customer reviews)I purchased this unit used to have a Blu-Ray player and an upscale DVD player. The first movie I put in the system told me that I may have to upgrade my firmware in order to play the new content. For giggles, I went to the Insignia Website and downloaded the latest firmware, created a CD and within just a few minutes had the unit working.
It is not the fastest Blu-Ray available of course, but it works great, sounds great through the optical port and is overall a great deal if you can find it for about $100 used or $150 new. Anything over that cost you can probably find a newer, faster version. Overall, I recommend this purchase to anyone looking to get into the Blu-Ray game for $100. Hope this helps.

Sharp Aquos LC37D62U 37-Inch 1080p LCD HDTV Review

(More customer reviews)I picked up this television almost two weeks ago. After tweaking the color and contrast settings, the picture quality is phenomenal. Fortunately my set does not suffer from the banding issues that its larger brethren (42"/46"/52") suffered. Overall it's a great tv. Now for a few minor negatives. There is only on RF input (coaxial cable) for the ATSC over the air antenna (OTA), QAM, and analog cable. In previous models there were separate inputs for each. Therefore, you could receive OTA programming, analog cable, as well as any unscrambled digital cable channels that your cable company provides. For most this is not a problem, but I like redundancy , and would prefer to be able to receive all three. With this set you can either have an OTA antenna or cable, not both. The other negative would be the lack of digital inputs. This model has only 2 HDMI inputs. Its predecessor, the 37D90U had a DVI input and 2 HDMI inputs. For most this is not an issue, but I have a media center PC that I hook up to the tv as well as other digital devices such as an upconverting DVD player. Aside from these two minor issues, this television really is an excellent buy. I would however recommend that you but it locally (sorry Amazon) and have the store take it out of the box, turn it on, and have them either hook up a dvd player with a color calibration DVD or tune it to a channel with a light colored background to make sure it has neither dead nor stuck pixels nor any visible bands. Believe me, you do not want to suffer through having to return a large tv because there are banding issues. For more on what banding is, google the lc-46d62u model on the AVS forum and read all of the horror stories that many have dealt with. I would highly recommend this television, but everyone has different needs and you should always do a thorough investigation of what set would best suit your situation. (More customer reviews)I've been using this for 2 weeks now, and it's my first blu-ray player (no PS3). The good stuff: Excellent look, not too loud, amazing picture and sound. Working ethernet and USB port. (I haven't had to download any firmware or code updates, but I'm sure it'll work fine.)
Operations: No fan noise, no noise while playing, but during menu & loading, you hear some track-seeking which is audible at 10'... nothing offensive, though. I just noticed last night, after my 5th blu-ray a little flicker in in the bottom center of the screen during the credits of Juno... not sure if it's a bad disc or a player having a problem. It was repeatable, and the disc seemed clean. Lastly, the load time, eject time, etc seems just fine. Not instant or as fast a nice DVD player, but not noticably slow. I've heard alot about slow disc-loading, and if it is a problem on other players - it's not a problem on this one. Lastly, sometimes when you click on a menu instead of pausing, the screen with show a "progress-bar" for 2-4 seconds while the next manu loads, which isn't completely kosher, but doesn't bother me.
The so-so stuff: I'm giving this 5-stars because it's near-perfect at what it's designed to do for it's price, but it's not perfect. One reason to get a mid- to lower-cost player is to (duh) save money... if you're someone who has an older receiver that doesn't decode the two new DD and DTS formats, and (probably) doesn't decode multi-channel PCM, this player isn't for you. It only has stereo-out analog RCA plugs, not 5.1 or 7.1 analog outputs.
That means you can't bypass your receivers pre-amp to play the newer audio formats and let the blu-ray player decode them. My old Receiver (which I used the player with for a week) only decoded DD 5.1 (no DTS, and only 2-channel PCM to 48khz). This player lets you send a PCM stream to your receiver from an internally decoded DTS 5.1 signal, but this didn't work for me... as my player can't receive 5.1 PCM streams, it only saw it as 2-channel. At least the player lets you downsample 96khz PCM to 48khz, so that I at least got sound (Golden Compass only has DTS 5.1 or DTS HD Master).
With my new receiver, all formats work perfectly, all bitstreamed.
Some people perhaps are holding off for new receivers because they don't want to connect through the player's analog RCA 5.1/7.1 connectors - but this is probably mis-information. What you want to avoid is taking digital sound, converting it to analog, then back to digital, then back to analog... don't worry - you wouldn't be doing this. Basically you would be doing all your processing in the player digitally, then once it is sent out through the pre-outs to the receiver you'd bypass the receiver's processing and it would go straight to the amplifier (which is of course analog anyway).
So my conclusion for thos people with older (but good) receivers - this blu-ray player won't save you any money. The best savings would be to pay a little more for a player with 5.1 analog outputs and continue to use your existing receiver.

(More customer reviews)The unit works fine most of the time, but it does have some issues that make me wish I had bought a different model.
First the good stuff. The included Samsung Apps are awesome. The firmware upgrade process is quick and easy. Streaming Netflix movies through this unit is better than streaming directly to my TV because it doesn't require a major rewire of my audio system as this unit is already connected to my AV receiver.
The unit is so light that pushing buttons actually moves it around. It would be great if it had a bit more substance so that it would just stay in place on the shelf. Occasionally, it pixelates, audio drops out, or just generally does strange things. As mentioned in other reviews, a power cycle will fix the problem. It only has one HDMI 1.4 output, so if you want to use 3D, you need to be sure you have HDMI 1.4 support through the entire path to your TV. My AV receiver is less than a year old, but doesn't support HMDI 1.4. That means that I have to either buy a new AV Receiver or connect the DVD directly to my TV. I chose the latter, but that means that I don't have surround sound for 3D content without some creative new wiring. I like the Panasonic approach to this better. Their 3D DVD players have two HDMI outputs (1-1.4 & 1-1.3), which allows you to connect one cable directly to the TV for the 3D picture and one to the AV Reciever for surround sound.
