(More customer reviews)I am on my 17th day of daily calls to Mack Camera to check on paperwork status to get my Samsung DLP TV repaired.
Getting my 'in warranty' set repaired with these people is like applying for government benefits. There is like a FIFTY-STEP PROCESS spanning DAYS AND DAYS. I am on my third week right now. And I don't even have any hope of having my unit repaired.
Based on their own estimates, I am at least 10 days away from having a technician being scheduled.
WHATEVER YOU DO, DON'T EVER BUY THIS GARBAGE.
In retrospect, given the pain and suffering, and time I have wasted on this, i would have much rathered paid for the repair out of my own pocket. I would have had a working TV at least a week ago...

I'm honestly surprised Costco sells any DLP sets considering how dark their picture setup was on the sales floor. I bought it 2 months ago based on the confidence taken from prior buyers experience, my own experience w/ a 2004 Samsung 61" DLP, and lastly, the review of a similar model 65" Mits in the Sept 2009 issue of Home Theater Mag.
When I got it setup and began trying to adjust the picture settings to my liking, I couldn't seem to find the right combination to suit me. Fortunately, Home Theater Mag's article gave the precise user settings they employed during their testing. I tried them and, voila, excellent picture. I actually feel the picture exceeds my prior Samsung's quality, and I always raved about it.
If you are happy with a 50" or smaller picture, consider all formats. But if you are drawn to a true movie experience combining picture excellence with low cost, look no further. These new Mits DLP units really perform.

When the hd dvd player went out, the square trade warranty folks responded to my query in less than 2 hours. When I explained that I did not want to ship the tv/dvd player combo in for a refund of purchase price because I was disabled and used the tv for a computer monitor as well as to play dvds, the square trade folks were incredibly compassionate and with simply turing in a statement that the hd dvd player did not work, they refunded a portion of the money within hours so I could purchase a separate player to go with the tv. These folks are incredibly kind, very helpful and make using the warranty very easy and convenient, which is much appreciated as my disability would make it very difficult if I had purchased an in-store warranty. I strongly encourage everyone to purchase a square trade warranty. If you need to make good on the warranty, you will find these folks very easy to deal with. I had purchased a warranty on a computer from another company and they were condesending, took over a year to fix the computer and when it still didn't work right, they basically told me to get lost. Square trade was a pleasure after that negative experience and I will be sure to get Square Trade on any electronics I purchase in the future. Peace and Goodwill.

Samsung SyncMaster 710MP 17" LCD Monitor with TV Tuner -Silver Review

(More customer reviews)I've used this monitor as my primary office desktop monitor for almost two years. It's a great LCD with analog VGA connections to a PC. (Some but not all newer LCDs have all digital DVI connections for PCs and other digital inputs.)
Some reviewers note that TV pictures are not as sharp as computer images. This is true, but maybe unfair as the problem is more related to the resolution of the incoming TV signal than the performance of the monitor. At 1280x1024 pixels native resolution, the 710MP has far more pixels to fill than the 480 scan lines provided by a standard TV signal. The result when displaying standard TV on a higher resolution monitor is some fuzziness up close. Higher end digital TVs (like some of Samsung's own) cure this problem with an internal up converter that fills in added pixels with complex algorythims performed by dedicated video processors. The 710MP does not have any internal video processor to perform such image magic (nor should it be expected at this price point). This explains why the picture-in-picture (using only part of the LCD screen for TV) display is sharper than the full screen mode. Using an HDTV, DVD or other higher resolution signal cures the fuzziness by using the full available resolution of the 710MP screen.
For primary use as a monitor, I've been extremely satisfied. The built-in speakers are clean sounding and more than adquate, if you don't demand driving bass or surround sound for gaming.
If your PC video card supports digital DVI out to a monitor, you might prefer a model with DVI inputs. Most people's computer are still analog out to the monitor and the 710MP or it's 19" cousin the 910MP are good choices to allow you to work and monitor television (or other video signals) at the same time.
My experience is that the picture is better using the tuner in the Samsung monitor than using a PC based tuner and video-card to provide picture-in-picture capability in a pure monitor without its own tuner.
On another computer with a high quality 19" Dell LCD monitor and an ATI 9600 All-in-Wonder video card, artifacts resulting from video processing and low television signal resolution are worse than on the Samsung monitor with a built-in television receiver. The downside? The ATI card can record television (in this case through Windows Media Edition). The Samsung can only display television (not record it).
This monitor was my first Samsung product, but its quality construction and performance has me looking at Samsung as a preferred supplier as I consider larger LCD or DLP televisions.
If you understand the limits of technology you are buying, the Samsung 710MP is a great choice. It is first a computer monitor and secondarily offers television viewing, both picture-in-picture and full screen. It can display both standard television (with the included tuner) or HDTV (with an external tuner). HDTV is crystal sharp.
I highly recommend Samsung monitors and LCD televisions after my experience with the 710MP.

It is protection for an "investment" in a "substantial electronic purchase" and WELL worth the money, compared to the "out-of-pocket" costs on the chance that some unforeseen "quirk" or "defect" makes itself known shortly after the manufacturers warranty expires.

(More customer reviews)I've been through 3 t.v.'s so far. The first t.v. I bought was my first HDTV ever but the picture was just not that good. I felt like it wasn't a good upgrade from SDTV. The second t.v. I bought had a really good HD picture and an acceptable SD picture, but no matter what I watched the picture was always dark for some reason even if I increased the brightness or contrast. That t.v. also lacked the inputs I needed for different things like my cable box, game systems, etc.
After deciding to give it one more shot, I stumbled upon this t.v. with it's great specs and many inputs. I have to say that this t.v. has excelled my expectations. From Standard definition channels to High definition channels, this t.v. is a winner. It is so bright even during the daytime (funny how others mentioned this too lol) and it has those inputs that I wanted. So far I've played my Xbox 360 on this t.v. and the picture cannot be beaten. The picture is so crisp and clear that it puts those other t.v.'s I had to shame. Oh and about the picture being dark, it can't be. I only have the settings on the "Game Mode" that this t.v. has and I can see every detail there is in the games. I haven't even brought up the brightness or contrast yet and there is no need for it! There is even an option in the menu to make dark scenes even more clear!
The sound on this t.v. is also good. I thought I had my surround sound speakers on when using the t.v. but I actually was using the t.v. speakers and yes they were that loud at a low volume setting. So here is how I sum it up:
VIDEO: 10 out of 10
I have not yet been disappointed with the SD or HD picture of this t.v. Whites are white, blacks are black.
AUDIO: 10 out of 10
If something ever happened to my surround sound speakers, I wouldn't care because it will be like they never broke.
INPUTS: 9 out of 10
It's nice that they're 3 HDMI inputs but I wish there was a second component input. But since everything is going HDMI these days, this is not a problem.
PRICE: 10 out of 10
I've seen this t.v. going for up to $899 but I bought it for $699. What a steal at this price.
OVERALL: 10 out of 10
Finally I have found the t.v. that I have been looking for all this time. I had to wait until 2008 to get it, but it was definitely worth the wait. If you have been waiting to get an HDTV, then now is the time to get it. You won't be disappointed.

(More customer reviews)I have purchased 3 warranties on various products this past year. My 15" Flat Screen being one of them. It worked great for about 6 months. I filled out a claim, they first thought that my TV was under a manufacturer warranty. I contacted them showing them it was only under that warranty for 90 days, so they reviewed my claim for me then and there and authorized a full refund - here's how it went.
They emailed me, with a link to a shipping label, I packed up the tv and shipped back to them the same day. They kept me informed about the progress of the shipping almost on a daily basis, inspected it - took 2-3 days then contacted me with the news that they would send me a refund. I received my full refund - this took a total of 10 days from start to finish.
I'm extremely pleased with their service and was pleasantly surprised (not something that happens often) that Square Trades is as reputable as they say.
I will certainly be buying other warranties from Square Trades in the future.

(More customer reviews)I purchased a 42" flat screen tv a few years ago, and was naturally concerned about what to do after the 1 year manufacturer's warranty had expired. The store offered its own extended warranty program, but I was hesitant about putting down hundreds of dollars for a 3 year extended warranty. Surely there was something more economical with the same, or better service?
I heard, via word of mouth, of a third-party alternative called Squaretrade. Intrigued, I checked reseller ratings, and was very shocked to see a lifetime rating of 9.7. I read many of the reviews, and they all consistently praised ST's dedication to fulfilling its warranty promises. Of the few that were not pleased with ST service (and some of them were the customer's fault), I was impressed by the follow-up messages left by ST's representatives to resolve the situation.
Convinced, I ended up purchasing a 3 year warranty through Squaretrade, for just ~$40. ST runs monthly %-off discounts, so you can always get a very good bargain. To clarify, if I remember correctly, the 3 year warranty is really a 2 year warranty, since the first year overlaps with the first year of the manufacturer's warranty. However, you should read the fine print to double check.
Talk about knocking on wood. My TV broke recently, and so I submitted my claim form to ST, which primarily comprised faxing a copy of my receipt to them (don't throw it away!), and describing my problem. I was expecting a reply a few months later, but Squaretrade promises resolution in less than week. I was shocked to find in my email inbox, a message from ST indicating that since it was cost prohibitive to ship my TV back to them for repairs, they would instead be refunding my original purchase price in its entirety, through PayPal. Sure enough, the money was sent the next day.
This is legendary service, the kind consumers dream about. You can buy a ST warranty with complete confidence, and be assured of their guarantees. Regarding TVs, they will not cover certain issues, e.g. burn-in on a plasma, and lamp replacements on DLPs. Again, check the fine print (don't worry, there's not too much to read).
I'm going to be buying all my warranties through ST in the future, recommending them to my friends and families, and making sure my children, and my children's children buy Squaretrade warranties. I wholeheartedly recommend them (and no, I'm not getting paid by ST to write this review).

It can't get better than this !!! I know have 3 warraties with them and today it will be 4 with the one i bought for my replacement TV. great company

(More customer reviews)2 months after receiving this TV the screen has gone black. Samsung instructed us to ship it to a service repair center and shipping is the responsibility of the customer. I called UPS and the cost to custom-pack a 32" televisions is 120 $. I called Samsung to request a box to ship it in and they re-iterated, shipping is the responsibility of the customer - but would send me a return label. So now we have an 800 $ television that's going to cost 120 $ to pack for warranty. We've only had it two months. I see from another reviewer that sending it Samsung is no guarantee the television will come back any time soon.
On a related note - up until 2008 Samsung's 32" televisions received free in-home repair service. As of 2009 32" is now considered "small" and must be shipped to the manufacturer for service.
Great TV just don't throw away the box and if it breaks take a deep breath and don't bother calling Samsung for sympathy.
Update September 17, 2009: It's been a month and we still don't have our TV back. We've called Samsung every week since they received it. Today we were told the replacement part would take too long to arrive and they would begin the process of approving a replacement television. This process entails Samsung repair shipping the TV to Samsung corporate. Once corporate receives the TV they can can process the replacement. If our TV is no longer available they will offer us something "comparable". This new phase should take "less than a month".
