I loved this TV from the moment I turned it on. The picture is perfect, the menus are easy.
My only not-good surprise was no optical-input. That was solved by replacing the component cables & optical sound with a single HDMI cable - that is easier to hide anyway!

(More customer reviews)First, I just received my second set from Amazon today. The first set had an issue on the inside of the GLOSSY glass screen. I couldn't tell if it was a thread or a small crack in the screen. It obviously wasn't supposed to be there, and Amazon swapped it out for me. I'm on my first couple hours on the second set, but I haven't see the same issue with the second set yet. This does support a couple other reviewers suggesting quality control may be an issue with these sets. This contradicts the weight of the TV suggesting it should be very well built.
The TV is stunningly simple to look at. There isn't a lot of extra bezel or showy manufacturer's name plates. I love this, as I'm usually driven nuts at having to look at a constant advertisment of a product I've already purchased. The "LG" that lights up at the bottom when the TV is turned on, can be set to be off when the set is on. This effectively means in a dark room (as mine is), the ONLY thing you see on this TV is the picture...exactly as it should be. The only exception is a small set of lights along the bottom that are only powered during power on and off to inform the viewer of this.
My general impression on the picture quality is mostly very impressed. I'm not a display expert so I'll only state what I notice as a slightly more "techy" than average viewer. These sets do seem to have a screen uniformity issue. Large and bright, white or very light colored sections of the screen will show light horizontal bands. These bands are light, but can be distracting depending on the viewer. It seemed to get better with more hours on the first set, but it could have been the firmware issue. Either way, know that if you watch a lot of content containing mostly white screens, you may want to look at another TV. Some people claim to not be able to see this. Others state they see even more of it during panning scenes. Perhaps there is some difference from one panel to the next. Either way, I have seen it on two sets, so anyone looking at purchasing the set should expect it, unless there is an update (software or hardware) to the set at some time.
I looked at a backlit/local dimmed set like this for one big reason though...CONTRAST. Buying this set to watch solid bright screens would seem to be a waste. Where this particular set really shows it stuff is in the black level it can achieve. Movies are beautiful. I thought my old RPTV had a nice picture, but the sharpness and clarity of the 55LE8500 really put my old set to shame. As mentioned above, when you turn off the LG logo, all you see is the picture. Even if there is letterboxing, you will only see the picture. The rest of the screen will be as black as the bezel, and in a dark room, you won't notice it as letterboxing at all.
Colors are vivid and natural looking. The settings from the factory are pretty decent, but count on using the two extra ISF settings that can be customized to your liking. Having a knowledgable Tech to come over to properly set up the TV would be wise if you can afford it, but it's not neccesary to achieve a nice picture. There is even a built-in menu system to aid you in doing so.

Overall, this is probably the best 2D TV released in 2010. If you can control the lighting in your room, and you don't watch lots of source material with large patches of very light scenes, this is the TV for you. Amazon is a great source for the set, but know the wireless media kit was offered free with the set last week, and the price has been changing dramatically (down and up and back down again). I gave it 4 stars because it could have been a bit better, and probably should have been.

I own a Panasonic Viera th-50pz80U (480hz 1080p)that I bought 2 years ago, and my brother owns the newer g10 50 inch 600hz panasonic, and this phillips is as nice as those two Plasma TVs. Upsides of this tv, LCD, more durable as far as moving around. Plasma tvs are still glass and need to be kept upright, never to be placed on their face. this can be moved more. It is brighter than the plasma TV at baseline. Colors pop without haveing to put the TV into a brighter mode as I have done before on my plasma. there is no burn in or streeking as with the plasmas if not taken care of. I have not had a problem with the panasonics, but on rare occasion on pause I will see a little burn in that will fade on my plasma. I think that the speed of the TV, 240hz, has made it comparable to my plasma for everyday movies. This has a digital motion program built in the set which can be turned off and on. For regular movies and TV, I turn it off. On animated movies, wow, i think this TV beats my plasma. The draw back with the digital motion is that it looks really choppy in movies with a lot of action, like car chases . It does funny things with the people on the screen as well. If it is focused on a character, it almost feels as if they were standing there in the room. It looses the warmth and depth in background, and again seems choppy when the focus person or object moves, and looks really processed (like a computer straining to keep up with rate) if the background moves. Regular movies and sports, I love my Plasma TV. This Philips 5505 model does not have Wifi built in for net flix, but the 5705 model does. This one runs a bit cheaper, and as a second nice tv for the bedroom, this works well and is a great value for the speed and size. Only a few of the upper models from sony and LG have 240 hz LCD/LED tvs, and those models will cost you quite a bit more for a comparable TV. The Cheapest i saw the Sony was around $1100 for a 40 inch. For LCD tvs, this one is great, and the digital motion can be turned off which is a nice feature. As a final note, my friend sprung for a samsung 46 inch 120hz model, and spent considerably more, and this toast it all around. again with the samsung as with most LED tvs, they over process the image and it looks choppy and unnatural. That is why i like the fact I can turn on and off the Digital motion feature. Check this TV out, great value and performance.

The Bezel is a glossy bezel, reflective
The screen is essentially flat. I note a small reflection when the tv is off, but there is no reflection when the tv is on, and i can tell you my plasma tv that is one draw back, the reflection on bright days. in looking at the other lcd/led tvs on the market, this is the same as most of them these days. My friends Samsung 46" 650 model has an actual plastic protective cover over the LCD screen which does reflect, that was a shock. the non reflective front is one of the advantages of any LCD/LED tv over most plasmas
Mesurments 26 1/2 tall, 9 3/4 at base, tv 3 3/4 thick, 39 across horizonal, corner to corner at 40" screen, almost 43 corner of bezel to corner of bezel.
Finally, LCD/LED tvs run much cooler than plasma tvs, so this tv is much cooler and nicer in my room than my plasma would be.
One final note. Depending upon if you want Net capability for streeming videos from the internet eg, netflixs, or blockbuster streeming vidio, the 5705 model online here at amazon is only a few dollars more. I got my tv at a warehouse retailer for less than the current price today on sale, so this model was a no brainer, and I don't really care about the net capability because various blu-ray players have that capability as well. so if you want a stand alone tv and you plan to get a blu ray player, net capapble doesn't matter. if you have limited space and watch all your movies offline, then the 5705 model would be worth the investment.

(More customer reviews)I purchased the Warpia StreamHD after seeing the product at CES last week and I have been pleased with it's performance. Set up was not a problem on my Windows 7 system and making the initial connection was painless. There are so many solutions out there that are pushing streaming video but after doing some research and seeing some of the others in action, I am very happy with this choice. The price point was very reasonable and the lack of limitations on what can be sent to your TV were very compelling. As an example, I looked at the Intel WIDI solutions and for the money that you have to spend, the latency and lack of extend mode we show-stoppers for me.
I have had the Warpia unit for the past couple of days and am putting it through it's paces. I have streamed from a DVD without issue and I have been streaming movies from Netflix with great results. Every so often (very infrequently) there will be a little break up in the signal but I have realistic expectations for a wireless vidoe solution. If it was wired and I saw occasional break up, I would be concerned but with a wireless connection, its totally acceptable.
One other point about the Warpia unit that I like is it's ability to be set on the table top or mounted on the TV. My TV is sitting on a cabinet so the tabletop orientation works but down the road, we are planning to wall-mount the TV and it will be nice to have the Warpia out of the way.
I saw another post that said that they were seeing issues with the iPhone or iPod Touch in close proximity of the Warpia unit. No issues here. I am typing this review with an iPhone sitting next to me and a movie playing on my TV.
I will update this review as I get more experience with the unit but wanted to get a preliminary review out as I am very pleased with the product.

(More customer reviews)I am updating this review after one month, as my knowledge about the product has increased. Basically I think it offers one of the best picture quality available at under $1K. The features that in my opinion set this TV appart are: outstanding HD picture and black levels, anti-glare coating, 3 HDMI inputs, great picture adjustment controls and swivel stand. On the minus side, the sound is tiny and the speakers are prone to vibration if you turn the bass higher. It's not a real concern for me, since I use external speakers anyway. Also, with some older material (not re-mastered) the picture may look a bit grainy. Perhaps not the best choice if you're viewing mostly SD programming.
Here is the original review, with a few minor adjustments:
Colours are deep, rich and accurate when fed a good quality signal through an HDMI or DVI connection. Even dark scenes are beautiful: deep black levels and excellent contrast are better than many plasma TVs. The screen backlight is uniform. There is no noticeable glare from the screen, although the glossy black bezel will show some reflections.
HD material looks excellent. Vibrant colours and outstanding detail give a perception of depths that is very pleasing, especially when watching HD sports channels. I found that component cables provided from my cable company did not work nearly as well. With HDMI/DVI the picture looks much better than it did in the store. I tried three different cables and I settled for a Monster 300 HDMI cable (rated 1080i) which in my opinion works well for this TV and is probably worth the extra few dollars as opposed to lesser brand names.
The Samsung A450 does a good job with high quality SD material and some channels look much better than a CRT of comparable size. There are no banding issues or artifacts that I notice, except to say that old SD material tends to look blurry on a 40 inch set vs the typical 27 inch CRT, which is to be expected. Feeding the signal through an upconverting DVD player seemed to help a bit in this regard. You can also use the upconvert setting on your cable box, but I found it more useful to set it on Auto-DVI.
The 720/1080i display is adequate for this size TV and in HD the picture looks as sharp as I'd ever want. In fact, I set up my cable box to 1080i, rather than the slightly sharper 720p. To my eyes, this resolution seems to give a more natural picture.
The design is quite attractive and the swivel stand is very handy if you put the TV on a stand, rather than hanging it on the wall. These TV's really have only a +- 30 degrees viewing angle before colours start to fade and while this model does better than others that I saw in the store, the swivel feature is a definite plus.
User menus are friendly and provide a vast array of options for picture adjustment. You can store three custom settings for each input (for viewing in bright/normal/dark room). The factory setting are quite good for standard cable TV viewing, but I found that different sources do require adjustment and you will be happy with all the controls that this set provides. One adjustment that CNET recommends is Picture:Picture options: Film mode: auto (rather than off), which should engage the 3:2 pull down for optimum viewing of film based material.
With a picture so sharp and clear, some lower quality material shot in low light (such as concerts and movies) may appear a bit grainy. While the digital noise reduction is largely ineffective, reducing sharpness all the way to zero (if necessary) effectivelly cleans the picture with minimal loss of detail. This is also recommended by CNET for the movie setting. However, some TV's fair better in this regard (for example the PN50A450, which I also own, has excellent noise reduction and even with the larger size, SD channels look better. However, the HD material is sharper and the blacks are deeper on the LN40A450). If you plan to use cable TV, the SA 4250HD box gives a better SD picture than the older 3250, so I would recommend it.
DNIe seems more of an experimental technology at this point. I found it more useful on the larger plasma, and I almost never use it in this LCF. It is mostly useful for sports, giving exceptional sharp and bright picture but at the expense of colour accuracy (especially for the green colour). A little fiddling with the green/red balance (about 10% towards red) will produce a more natural effect. For the standard/movie settings, where colour accuracy is the main consideration and sharpness not as important, DNIe is disabled. All in all, with so many adjustment options, in the quest for that perfect picture, you will, at first, find yourself reaching for the remote control more often than you really want, which is why having three custom setting per input is so useful - a feature that most TV's in this price range lack.
Set-up is easy. The set is quite light (40 pounds) and can be handled by just one person. Once plugged in, it will find all available channels and external sources. You can customize the names for each source, which makes it easier to identify them.
Motion blur doesn't seem to be a problem with this set, at least so far. There was only one instance that I noticed and re-booting the STB eliminated the problem. However, plasma TV's still seem to have the edge here (at least on paper), but I decided to go with LCD, since I like the extra brightness and colour definition that it offers and black levels and contrast are excellent and comparable to the Panasonic TH42PX80 for example. Since I looked at this Panasonic set in detail, I can add that the colour accuracy on the Samsung is better. This is even more important since the Panasonic lacks some of the picture adjustment options. In the trade-off however, you give up a couple of inches of screen size and perhaps a higher quality cabinet.

Samsung LN32A550 32-Inch 1080p LCD HDTV Review

(More customer reviews)I've been wanting a new flat-panel TV for some time and, though I do make a lot of purchases on-line, I felt like I actually needed to look at a TV in person. My wife and I were looking at the TV's in Wal-mart when another customer pointed out that the better TVs had a higher contrast ratio and he thought that was the most important factor. Sure enough, the one we thought had the best picture was the one with the highest contrast ratio - it was 3200:1, the best 32-inch in the store. (I really wanted something with 1080p resolution, but they only had 720p in the 32" size TVs. We decided to get that one, since we had seen it and felt like we could enjoy it - but they didn't have one in stock...
I came home and began to research. It turns out that there are only a very few 1080p TVs in the 32" model, this being one of them. In looking at the contrast ratio I found that this one was rated at 15,000:1 - almost 5 times better than the best one at Walmart. (High contrast ratio seems to give you darker darks and whiter whites - lower contrast ratios have a milky looking gray where it's supposed to be black...) My research combined with what I saw in the store gave me the confidence to purchase a TV on-line. I settled on the Samsung LN32A550.
The TV arrived in good working order and I had it set up and running within 30 minutes. (The biggest problem was unhooking and moving the old one!) The picture is everything I could have imagined it would be - far better than anything I saw in the store. The crystal clear picture and crisp, well defined images make this simply the best picture I have ever seen on a TV. I saw a bit of a NASCAR race on this unit and the motion was unbelievably smooth - no after images at all.
I debated a bit on giving this unit a five-star rating. I felt like the picture quality so outrated the sound that I had to bump it up a bit. But if sound is an issue you may want to consider this to be a "four-star" unit. While the TV has a built in equalizer function (with some presets based on your listening preferences) I found the sound, even in the best adjustment leaves a lot to be desired. It has a tinny sound much like you would expect from an old transitor radio. I would suggest investing in a good pair of external speakers to enhance this unit. (If you already have a home theatre set-up sound is not an issue anyway...)
So far I'm glad I made this purchase. If Samsung can improve the speakers on this TV they will have the perfect TV!

UPDATE:
OK.... Now that I've owned this thing a few months I'll tell you how it's going:
First, it was pointed out to me in a post that the contrast ratio on 27- and 32-inch TV's was 15,000:1 instead of 30,000:1 as I incorrectly surmissed from the somewhat unclear (to me) product update. I have edited the initial review to reflect the correct information. I'm sorry for any confusion it may have caused. (If you want the higher ratio and have the room, you could consider going with a larger screen size. 15,000: is still a pretty amazing ratio though...)
Overall I am happy to report that I am just as satisfied today as I was the day I first turned it on. I did purchase a set of Creative GigaWorks T40 Premium 2.0 Speakers (available at Amazon.com) for around $125 - and this dramatically improved my viewing experience. (I'm sure the best option would be to use a home theatre set-up - but this unit is in my bedroom...)
I still recommend this TV - just don't expect too much out of the sound - without a little help.
