If you have the opportunity to see one operating next to similar models from the other major brands (yes, even the leading ones) you can immediately see what sets this set apart from the others. A truly rich, vibrant, and crisp picture which is shockingly realistic when you pump it with a true HD signal. It even does well with non-HD signals.
The physical design of the set is striking. It's hard to believe, but this unit is only about one inch thick, and when you see it from the side, its hard to make yourself believe it can actually function. Add to that that the built-in speakers actually sound pretty good, and you'll sit there and scratch your head as to how this can be possible. Yes, as difficult as it is to believe, somehow Samsung managed to cram speakers into a set than is only one inch thick which actually sound pretty good. As I sit and listen over time, I'm still surprised.
But of course the major factor is the picture quality, and after long comparisons with other brands, I've come to the conclusion that nothing on the market is close to it in its price range. Colors are bright, rich, and vibrant. The 120 Hz motion flow seems to work very well indeed. And if you have a large existing DVD collection, just use an upsampling DVD player and this TV does a great job of recreating a near-HD image. But, as I say, when you browse over to a true HD channel, the image quality is shockingly realistic. This appears to be a set that should do remarkably for the coming years, featuring everything except 3D (if that interests you). The LED technology is clearly superior to standard LCD technology in terms of both image quality and power consumption. Really, there is no comparison between LED and LCD technology.
The unit comes with a litany of features which are too long to list here. The unit has PIP (yes, its there, even though not advertised much - dig through the menus and you'll find it there), a number of preset adjustments for both audio and video, plus generally full manual control of virtually every setting. The 46" size is a large, but not overpowering, size for an average living room, and the potato-chip thickness coupled with a relatively low weight means you can easily point this on a wall, if desired (separate mounting hardware required). The unit supports Internet connections using a wired or wireless LAN hookup (wireless USB key purchased separately), can play both photos and videos off a USB drive, and has multiple hookups in the rear for computers, HD sources, and component video. It goes on and on.
I've bought nothing but Sony televisions for 20 years. I've always appreciated Sony's leading edge technology and design, and when it came time to replace our big Sony Trinitron set, I went into the deep investigation of LCD, LED, and HD televisions. That I picked this Samsung speaks volumes. Compare one for yourself and see if you agree. This is a class leading set. And these comments on the 6400 will likely be applicable to all Samsung LED sets, regardless of the specific series.
Five stars for a quality build, four stars for price (a tad high), and six for picture quality.

(More customer reviews)i absolutely love this tv!! its my first HDTV (i couldn't make sense of investing in one while my tv worked fine) then i passed this Samsung at Sam's (it's been out about 6 wks) and had never seen anything like it. this tv really stands apart from others - the clarity and depth is unbelievable! and the blackest black i've ever seen on screen (i'm the last of family and friends to purchase). needless to say, after resisting for a few weeks, i finally ditched the old tv and got this gem.
i've been enjoying it for a little over a week and am still amazed by how stunning it is. not to mention, there's so much it can do! i haven't explored everything... i have the internet hooked up but not my pc. i bought mine at sam's, for 100s less than you can find online. for viewing product demos, visit the samsung site. oh, and it was super easy to set up, i did it on my own and i'm not super techy.
edit: just returned from a trip and after watching the hotel tv every so often, i can't tell you how floored i was when i turned on mine. still stunning, still love it, no regrets after 3 months :)

(More customer reviews)My requirement for a television is quite simple: plug it in to the cable box and have it work the first time; then turn on the sports event of the day, e.g. Mets or Yankees, Jets or Giants, etc. The Samsung 46 inch LED TV does that very well. You plug it in, it works.
This TV does more with less. It weighs only about 40 pounds plus another 10 pounds for the stand. Compare that with the older Samsung 950 model of the same size which weighs 70 pounds. The elegant stand allows for easy rotation. The TV is only a little over one inch thick! Power consumption has been measured by reviewers at about 105 watts. The 950 model comes in at 180 watts.
The picture is great. The contrast ratio, rated at 3,000,000 to 1, exceeds that of older LCD TVs. The black areas are dark and the picture has an almost 3D quality. There are four preset picture options. I chose the "normal" setting. The next higher setting, "standard", makes infield grass look almost dayglow. I do not think that there is a need to have any further adjustment done on the picture. However, there is an automatic dimming of the overall brightness for dark scenes. For instance, when the credits of a movie run against a black background the lettering becomes dimmer. This has no effect on sports, but does effect dark movie scenes.
The screen surface does reduce reflections but does not eliminate them entirely. The black frame is shiny and does also reflect some light. Rotating the screen to the best angle helps.
The remote provides choices for four picture size variations. I use "16:9" for the HD format or "wide" to make the non-HD, 4:3, video fill the screen. That loses some of the 4:3 picture at the top and bottom edges, but the picture quality is still good.
The sound also has four preset choices. Although, the internal speakers are not bad, I decided to use my sound system for the audio. The TV has an audio output connection, but the TV remote volume control only allows variation in the sound level for the internal speakers. The audio output stays at a constant level. I got around this by taking the audio from my cable box directly to my sound system and controlling the level with the cable remote. This works.
Although Samsung provides a version of the instruction manual on a USB drive with the TV, I found it easy to download and print a pdf of the manual from the Samsung support center. Having the printed manual is helpful. See my comment for the web address of the support center.
After one month, I still really like this TV. It is great for sports. An added bonus is that my electric bill has actually gone down.
Note: This review was written for the 6000 model. The 7000 model differs from the 6000 model in its I/O capabilities. Recently some people have reported that the 7000 has a better picture. If you do not need the extras, go with the 6000 and save a few dollars.

(More customer reviews)I originally ordered the Samsung LN40B650 and was fairly certain that I had made a good choice. I don't know why but I starting second guessing my decision, which led me to review the Samsung LED LCD televisions. While the reviews were not extremely glowing, the Samsung UN40B6000 looked like it could better the picture of the CCFL LN40B650 and I canceled the order for CCFL and went with the 6000 series LED television. One of the "cons" of the edge-placed LED televisions is a noted lack of screen uniformity but that is for larger screen sizes and I thought the 40 inch screen would not be as prone to that problem.
Some thoughts and observations:
1. The clear screen is very good - I have 3 windows, and a bright ceiling light; there are no reflection problems. In some of my earlier posted Amazon photos, a window reflection was evident on the screen, but not really noticeable in real-life viewing. I found, however, if I looked for the reflection, I could see it. I reshot the photos in lower light to better illustrate the performance of the UN40b6000. The first photo shows how good the screen image is when viewed directly on; this quality remains solid to 15 - 20 degrees of center. The image does lighten but I disagree that it rapidly deteriorates to poor quality even up to a viewing angle of 45 degrees; it's still a good image.
2. Out of the box the picture is good, but after using the settings recommended by CNET, with some slight personal adjustments, the picture for many Blu Ray pictures are as good as I've seen.
3. Despite the stated mega contrast ratio of 3,000,000:1, the gamma setting needed to be adjusted to at least +2 or +3 (highest) values to keep dark scenes properly contrasted. One interesting fact regarding the off-center viewing is that contrast for dark lit scenes actually improves.
4. The sound is NOT bad; the two UN40B6000 rear/downward firing speakers in custom mode produces respectable sound for a television set. Now, if you want theater-quality surround sound, then this TV is going to fall far short of such expectation, but what set would not? My suggestion is to go into sound mode; select custom, select graphic equalizer (set 100HZ to max; 300HZ to 3/4 range); set SRS Trusurround HD to "On" and give a listen. If you're still not happy, buy a sound bar.
5. The backlit remote is nice for nighttime viewing and is fairly user friendly.
6. The Samsung Blu Ray and UN40B6000 automatically recognize one another which may play a role in the exceptional picture that is produced.
The bottom line is that UN40B6000 produces a very good to excellent picture, and the sound is decent for a television set - is it worth the couple of hundred dollars more than its CCFL counterpart? I cannot say with certainty, but my hunch is that it is. However, where its performance may exceed say the LN40B650 is most likely limited to direct viewing +/- 20 degrees off center. After that the CCFL set may hold an advantage.

Update 9/25: I have read the reviews regarding limited viewing angles, but I have not noticed the dramatic degradation that has been observed by others. For comparison, I have placed 3 images under typical dark viewing conditions (note all camera settings are in static manual mode, no photo editing performed). The series of photos uploaded on Amazon do not come close to the actual picture on the screen in terms of quality, but they do demonstrate relative difference in picture color and contrast as the viewing angle is moved from center - please note photo placement captions. Overall, I am VERY happy with the UN40B6000 performance and have every intention of keeping it. The picture is outstanding when viewed directly, and may diminish with increased viewing angle, but it's more of an excellent to good, than a good to terrible. My wife keeps complaining that the picture is too good - that it's like watching a movie being made instead of viewing a movie - it does not make sense to me either.
UPDATE 1/22/10: In the comment section I was asked the set's height with stand. When I performed the required action by using a metal measuring tape positioned on the right side of the TV, the set went into store demo mode that displayed features of the TV - I needed Samsung technical support to get me out of the stored program. On the plus side - at 23:00, Friday night, I had a technician within minutes. Samsung did not understand why it happened but it did, and they directed me out of the program. FYI, I measured over the front buttons on the right side of the TV and I now believe the metal tape simultaneously contacted two buttons which initiated the store demo program - do not take a measurement in that fashion! If for some reason the store display comes on, from menu, go to "plug and play" and advance to section that has choices "store demo" or "home use" select "home use" to exit the program.

(More customer reviews)Disclaimer: I actually purchased the UN46C6900 which is the exact same television with a different colored bezel, however all here applies to the 6800 as well.
After doing a great deal of research online and in the shops, this TV really seemed to make a lot of sense in terms of price vs. performance, and after my purchase I have to say I certainly agree. I am coming from a higher end 32" Samsung LCD from about 3 years ago, and have spent time with friends and their various Samsung, Toshiba, Sony LCDs and Panasonic plasmas. Hopefully this review will help you make a decision and also provide some insight into using it for various input sources, particularly with a PC.
The first question you need to ask yourself is if you want 3D... if you're like me, you'll find the added cost probably isn't worth it, particularly if you already have a Blu-ray player (given that you can get a better deal on 3D glasses with a Samsung Blu-ray bundle). For me it would have cost around $400-500 more to go 3D (for the added set cost of the UN46C8000 and two pair of glasses), and after seeing it in person, 3D will definitely get a lot better in the years ahead. Outside of the performance and illusion (which was pretty cool from my in-store demos), the two problems for me in particular were that the basic and advanced rechargeable glasses weren't comfortable with my prescription glasses, and the basic glasses use a non-rechargeable watch/coin style battery which sounds like a pain to deal with. That said I am definitely interested in 3D (particularly for games), in a few years I will likely upgrade looking closely at 3D sets to see if the quality and ergonomics have improved.
So anyway, actually on the topic of this tv! The main reason I chose this particular set was because I was interested in 120 or 240hz LED-LCD (mainly due to decreased energy consumption), and also some type of smart backlight technology to get better blacks. I've also had good success with Samsung sets, and they seem to offer the most models compared to Sony or Toshiba, so I could really dial in what features I wanted (or didn't want). So in terms of features, because many edgelit LED sets historically have been pretty horrible in terms of light uniformity, particularly in dark scenes, I was initially interested in the local dimming backlit LED sets such as the UN46B8500. Desire to save some expense and wanting to get a 2010 model year set (improved firmware considerations), I settled on this particular version given it's "precision dimming" functionality. Of course the challenge here is that the 6800/6900 set is edgelit, so while the same trickery in the B8500 was going to be impossible (turning off light directly behind the LCD), it pulls off a similar effect pretty admirably with a thinner profile and lot less cost. How this works is, first imagine a series of LEDs placed around the entire perimeter of the screen (picture a movie-star dressing room mirror with bulb lights all around it). These LED's can be turned on/off on the fly, dynamic to the content on the screen. For an extreme example, picture a game with a completely black loading screen, but with white text "Loading" in the lower right corner. In this scenario, all the perimeter LEDs are turned off, except for the ones in the corner, so the black areas are definitely black while the text is back/side lit. In some scenarios, where the solo text is in the middle of the screen, you get a bit of a projection of light from above and below, but this is very subtle and generally noticeable only from off center viewing. In dark scenes and places where pockets of black are on the sides of the screen, the precision dimming effect is really great. The design overall is a good compromise between the previous backlit LED sets in terms of price and form factor versus performance.
Regarding power consumption, I'll say I'm pretty impressed. Using a kill-o-watt meter on my complete system alternating both of my TVs (this and Samsung CCFL-LCD 32"), I did a test using identical conditions and watching the same video clip on my Playstation 3. While using this C6900, the system overall drew 80 less watts while watching the clip. I was especially impressed given that this set is quite a bit larger, so at most I was expecting the power savings from the CCFL would be offset by the increase in size. Actually saving power overall is a real bonus.
Regarding performance over different inputs... when using this set, I have the following items connected:
- Playstation 3 (via HDMI through Sony receiver STR-DN1000)
- Nintendo Wii (from component RGB to the Sony receiver, upconverted to 1080i and sent to TV via HDMI)
- PC (Windows 7 64-bit, slow fan spinning ATI Radeon 4850 via DVI to HDMI cable to HDMI1 port, designated for PC)
- Antenna (for over-the-air local HD, I don't have cable or dish, I generally just watch shows/movies through PC, Netflix streaming, Hulu, etc)
NOTE: If you are using a PC with this set there are many special considerations that I have discovered. As with many 1080p sets, to get perfect 1:1 pixel mapping at 1080p resolution, the TV and PC require proper configuration when using HDMI (or in my case DVI-HDMI).
First off, the PC should be connected to HDMI port 1 (labeled for DVI devices). Once you have the PC connected, turned on, it must be set to 1920x1080 resolution (note that if you have an ATI video card, you will also need to set the Overscan Ratio to 100% in Catalyst Control Center, with Nvidia or Intel graphics this is not required).
Second, the TV must be configured properly. There are two ways to achieve perfect 1:1 mapping (or close to it) that require separate settings on the TV and each have their own pros and cons. Both require changing the "label" of the HDMI1 input within the Samsung TV menu:
Method 1: Use the DVI-PC label. This method will provide perfect 1:1 pixel mapping and the sharpest possible picture from a computer. However, I have discovered the big downside is that in this mode, most the TV's bells and whistles are disabled including "precision dimming" and "auto motion plus" (the polarizing smoothing effect introduced with 120/240hz sets). Losing precision dimming sucks (particularly 4:3 content such as videos and emulated games) because you essentially get glowing bars and generally poor blacks, essentially making this TV in PC mode look like the Samsung C6500. This condition also exists when using the PC-VGA port, you lose most of the control over the set and most processing effects are disabled.
Method 2: The DVI Devices label. Initially this method scales the screen funny and does not appear to provide 1:1 mapping, but does enable all the whiz bang effects afforded by this TV (precision dimming, etc). However, much to my delight I recently discovered that by using the screen mode function (the method to toggle the screen between 16:9, 4:3, 4:3 zoom, etc), you can select a "screen fit" mode that effectively scales the 1920x1080 resolution to the total screen size with no over or under scan. The method provides an image that is probably only 98% (read: hard to notice) as sharp as method 1, but in my opinion getting precision dimming back well more than makes up for it. It looks great using this configuration with the PC when playing games (iRacing, Dirt2, colsole emulators), web browsing (text is plenty sharp enough in this mode), watching videos, etc.
Ultimately, because you need to configure the set in this way to get the most out of the PC connection (changing the input label), it becomes impractical to connect the PC via a receiver with all of your other gear connected to the TV via one HDMI cable. I was little disappointed by this initially, but running two separate HDMI cables and occassionally switching inputs on the TV is a pretty easy compromise. You COULD run just one cable, and change the label of the input each time you would switch between PS3 and PC for instance, but the way the TV menus are setup, it becomes a pain, particularly because each input type may have special contrast/color settings. In the end, I have found two HDMI inputs configured independently is substantially easier to deal with.
With all that out of the way, the other inputs via my PS3 and Wii via the Sony receiver look just as fantastic, I couldn't be happier. The color is great and the crispness is there particularly with HD signals. Since I'm a huge Wii gamer (Big props to Sin and Punishment 2, No More Heroes 1/2, Mario Galaxy 2, Zack and Wiki, Metroid Trilogy, and lots of awesome WiiWare games, Cave Story, Light Trax, You me and Cubes), I will concede I'm used to resolution compromises, so I bit the bullet with my old TV and got an upconverting receiver which takes the Wii component signal and upconverts to 1080i to the TV via HDMI. Obviously this doesn't do miracles to the 480p signal (or 480i in some games), but it produces a significantly sharper image than using direct input via component on this TV. Edges are sharper, but yet smoothed out quite a bit, and the colors really pop... Mario Galaxy 2 and Sin and Punishment 2 are particularly striking). I hightly recommend going this route if you're a Wii gamer who wants the most out of the systems's image quality. PS3 of course looks gorgeous via Blu-ray movies and various games I play such as GT5 Prologue, Street Fighter IV and Wipeout HD.
So far so good then, right? Well, the one small criticism I will levy towards this TV is that the viewing angles are not quite as good as was hoping for. I will say that my older Samsung 32", while not having the same black levels and brightness certainly, did hold it's image consistency better from an angle. The clarity of this TV is astounding. With this TV, I can honestly say that I feel like I'm just peering through a window when watching HD content. There are times, three weeks into our purchase, that my wife and I exclaim "it's so clear!" while watching shows on 1080i. This is a big deal to me because we have a 65" Pioneer Kuro PRO-151FD in the living room, but now I prefer watching on this unit.
Blu-ray at 1080p is just beautiful and jaw-dropping. I played Ratatouille using a PS3, and the hairs on the mice and blades of grass are so detailed. I also noticed that the SD commercials seems clearer, and on some of them, someone with an untrained eye might mistake for HD if the pillars were not present.
I haven't hooked it up with a receiver yet, but the sound of the unit is more than adequate for our bedroom. We only go to "8" on the sound, which is animated as a blue circle on the lower left as opposed to a bar at the bottom of the screen. The "8" setting corresponds to about 1 o'clock, so you can go really loud if you wish.
I connected a PC to the unit and it can go up to 1920x1080 pixels at 60Hz, which is the max for my graphics card on that particular computer. Although it can display all those pixels, you can notice shadowing on the images and text. Not enough to give you a headache, but just enough to be noticed. If you do not plan on hooking a computer to this TV, then this is not a big deal. Actually, it's really minor considering you can watch Netflix and it does DLNA (accessing media files you share on your network).
I have this connected to my router via Ethernet, and even Netflix came out clear. I saw Dead LiKe Me and it still had that peering through a window effect. We watched Food, Inc. and was pleasantly surprised that Netflix serves that up in HD.
CON:
All HDMI inputs are located on the side. Although it's a good idea for game consoles and on the fly connectivity, I believe it would have been better to have one in the back and three on the side. This would give the users the option to use the rear connection for wall-mounting.
SUMMARY:
This is a great TV for around 8-10 feet of viewing. There are a lot of extras that you may not even touch, but if your main concern is clarity, you can't go wrong with this unit.

(More customer reviews)When you spend $1500 on a piece of technology you have certain assumptions and expectations about it. You do your research the best you can and hope that your purchase will be everything you hoped it would be. Occasionally, you are thrown for a loop and presented with some challenges that you didn't anticipate. That's what happened to me when I picked up this excellent TV. My old Sony LCD did not have HDMI ports, so I was relegated to the spaghetti bowl of component hookups to achieve high definition. I just had to have a TV with HDMI, so when I was finally in the market I knew it would have to be at least 46", LCD or something comparable, full 1080p, and have plenty of HDMI ports on it. With the exception of one small issue, this TV is everything I wanted.
I must say that the Samsung UN46C6500 LED TV is astonishing to look at. The colors are rich and saturated, black levels are the blackest I've ever seen, and the images are crisp and clear. The screen is a glossy finish, so it does reflect any light you might have in the room, but it's not overly distracting. The panel itself is super thin, only about one inch thick. The stand is very sturdy. Touch sensitive buttons line the lower right hand corner of the panel (kind of hard to see, but they're responsive). The bezel has a brushed matte charcoal grey strip covering a transparent acrylic (very elegant).
The one problem I have with this TV is not listed anywhere except inside the manual. I didn't see any other documentation or warnings about this, so I was a little disappointed when I encountered it. This TV is not compatible with HDMI versions older than 1.3. My old Onkyo receiver (TX-SR604) came with HDMI 1.1, so the TV would not display images through it. I had always thought that HDMI was backwards compatible. It's not on this TV, and the manual clearly says that if you have any components with HDMI versions older than 1.3 you may have issues with sound and video. Beware.
Because I was so disappointed that I would not be able to use HDMI through my receiver, I decided to upgrade to the Denon AVR-791 (which supports HDMI 1.4 and is 3D ready). Even though I'm another $500 poorer, I'm an extremely happy camper. Watching Avatar on blu-ray with this setup is truly amazing. The TV performs wonderfully and is otherwise exactly what I was wanting. I have not ventured into the internet TV features, but that's on the horizon. Unfortunately, the TV is not wifi compatible (unless you buy a USB adapter), so you'll need to use an ethernet cable (I actually knew this before buying).
Samsung makes incredible LCD and LED TV's. I would highly recommend them to anyone looking for a high definition viewing experience. Hopefully, my review will educate and warn those with older components. HDMI is the way to go, but you can always fall back on component cables if you have to. That just wasn't an option for me. When all is said and done, I don't regret my purchase at all. The end result was well worth the journey.

(More customer reviews)I purchased this Samsung after returning a 2010 46" Sony EX500. Sony was always a standard in quality for me, but something has really gone amis in the past few years. The television just lacked the deep black levels and crisp whites that make an impressive picture. That aside, this model Samsung was a downgrade in screen size, but a big increase in quality.
The picture is amazing. Although there are some issues with extremely fast movement, creating "artifacts", the picture quality is superb. The LED back-lighting is new in my household, so we weren't sure what to expect. The blacks are inky, and the brights could sear eyeballs if you turn the brightness to maximum. Compared to the Sony, changing channels is super quick and the remote control feels lighter and has a more intuitive layout. What's interesting to me is that the picture this Samsung produces is much smoother than what I've witnessed on any other TV. Whatever the difference their video-processing provides, I like it. This may sounds strange, but if you stare at this Samsung, versus almost any other maker, you'll be able to recall more of what you saw in the picture. Maybe the picture is easier on your eyes, but in the end it "just works".
Don't expect everything to be perfect though. In extremely fast scenes, the "artifact" issues are noticeable. There is also a screen uniformity issue on my unit where the bottom right and left tend to bloom with light when the screen should be deep black and the LED back-light is on. (Dear Samsung: if you can fix my unit, I'll up my score from FOUR stars to FIVE).
Overall, I would recommend this television for consumers looking for a 3-5 year television investment. 3-D televisions are going to be the next big thing, but if you don't want to spend a fortune paying off 3-D TV makers development costs, this is the TV for you.
