(More customer reviews)This is a review of the 2010 50" Samsung Plasma TV, PN50C590. I have owned this unit for a week. I am comparing this set to my 2009 46" Panasonic Plasma TV, U series.
This Samsung 50" is the top of the line for the Samsug 500 series.
Pros:
1) It has a swivel base which the Pansonic does not.

2) The appearance of the physical set is simple and attractive.
3) The TV picture is excellent as is the Panasonic.
4) PIP (picture-in picture), it's kind of a phony, you can only view the default TV in the sub picture while using other inputs.
5) 4 HDMI inputs, though only one works with DVI (see cons).
6) You can update the firmware yourself.
7) The channels change quickly, something that doesn't happen with the Panasonic.
8) The TV screen doesn't reflect ambient light sources very much. Reflection is a problem with plasmas such as my Panasonic but Samsung seems to have resolved this.
9) The electronic program guide is especially good. It shows both title and available program details. The Panasonic only shows the program title. The program guide data is incorporated in the broadcast and its up to the TV manufacturer as to what is displayed in this regard.
Cons:
1) Weak tuner. It's only just noticably weaker than my other TV tuners, not a major problem though I am disappointed that this expensive set should be like this.
2) Lack of accomodation for DVI sources. The problem here is that adapting DVI to HDMI means you have to have a separate audio input. Panasonic has an elegant solution of making it possible for you to mate any of the available audio inputs to any HDMI input. Samsung gangs only one audio input to only one of the HDMI inputs. I had to install separate speakers to accomodate one of my two DVR computers.
3) No close caption on mute. The Panasonic doesn't have it either. Would be nice to have.
4) 3:4 format doesn't work for HD 3:4 pictures. The problem here is that if you view many programs in the 3:4 format, the black spaces on each side of the picture can cause burn-in problems on the screen which is typical of plasmas. The fix is to have a light panel on each side of the picture when the TV set to 3:4. This TV will do this with older 3:4 broadcasts but not with HD 3:4 broadcasts, it will crush both the picture and black spaces (16:9 format) into a 3:4 space. Hopefully a firmware update will fix this. "Fit to screen" is usually an acceptable alternative to 3:4.
5) The light panels ( see 4 above) available for the 3:4 format are either blinding white or almost black. A middling gray panel would certainly be more acceptable for this format.On the whole, this is an acceptable TV. I think you can get an excellent picture with any plasma TV. The devil is in the details.

To get an excellent picture on this (or any TV) you need to make custom adjustments. Factory default settings are never right nor are the display TV sets in stores done right. Spend a little time fooling with the adjustments and you will get big rewards in the "OMG what a great picture" department.

(More customer reviews)Just got this unit a couple days ago. First, setup was a breeze, menu driven and easy to follow. Took less than 5 minutes, including internet connectivity. If you have a Netflix account, the setup was also super easy. Follow the on screen instructions, register your set at Netflix and within seconds, your ready to stream. Your Qeue is onscreen and streaming starts quickly. Impressive list of other internet based video sites as well. Not to mention streaming music and pictures from the more popular photo sharing sites. I should mention that the set is connected hardwired to a router in my living room so I cannot comment on the wireless setup yet.
I connected my set to a Dish Network 922 VIP HD reciever and I have to say, the picture is excellent - maybe not perfect, but darn close. Colors are accurate, bright and the picture is sharp and smooth. 240 Hz makes a huge difference from 120 HZ or 60 Hz. You will be impressed.
Remote is simple and comfortable in your hand. The menu's are quick, responsive and easy to follow. Little need for the manual.
Good number of inputs for your sat/cable receiver, home theater, blue ray player and game system. Xbox looks amazing on this thing and I am sure a Playstation looks just as good.
3D - I did not purchase the 3D glasses and emitter, and I really wish Sony included them. That is my only complaint. I did try out the 3D functionality in the store watching a ESPN football game. While the 3D was fun and far better than I ever remember it being, with so little content out there now, I figured I would wait a while.
If you are looking for a entry level, 3D ready, quality LED-LCD TV, you cannot go wrong with the HX800. The price is right and you will be impressed by this set.

I did a considerable amount of research and we finally decided on this one. Thought about a 120HZ model but didn't want to spend the extra money. It fits our budget and we are very satisfied with the quality and functionality. Don't have a blu-ray player yet but have watched standard DVDs with component video connection and picture quality is very very good. Streamed a Netflix movie or two in from our PC via HDMI cable and have viewed a considerable amount of satellite and over-the-air programming for the last month or so. Both standard def and HD picture quality, very nice. The volume leveling function is not perfect but it does help quite a bit. Sound with built-in speakers is good. Menus are user friendly and easy to navigate. Overall we are very pleased and would recommend this product to others.

(More customer reviews)This thing is great! Most TV mounts that I found were not only expensive, but really bulky. This one is the complete opposite! It's made by Samsung, so it perfectly fits with your Samsung TV (though I believe it's VESA mount compliant so it would probably work with other brands but don't quote me on that). It's so simple to set-up I actually thought I was missing something. They include all of the hardware you need for mounting in different types of walls, and the best part is that (assuming your TV is light enough) you can mount it in 1/2" or more of drywall without drilling into a stud! I have metal studs so this really was a huge time/money saver.
So basically you attach 4 disks into the back of your TV and then 2 bigger disks onto the wall. Then you just hang the wire between the two bigger disks and it hangs like a picture frame. The bottom left disk has a little kick stand that pushes the TV away from the wall to access cables (which on Samsung TVs are on that side). I found it works pretty well, but seems a bit precarious (though it probably isn't). Also, it would be nice if there was a felt cover around the end of the kickstand as the metal against the wall can leave some marks.
This mount is so amazingly thin it's ridiculous! It looks like the TV is almost just magically glued to the wall. However, because it is so close, and because Samsung was so insane and put such an ENORMOUS plug end on the power cord, the top left corner of my TV was being pushed out because of the plug. Luckily, the people at Samsung weren't completely stupid, and included this little 1/2" washers to put between the 4 little disks that go on the TV. This pushes the TV far enough away to relieve the problem, however it also makes the slim-mount a little less slim. While this isn't really the mount's problem, but rather the TV's, it still results in a bigger gap that would have been possible. Just a little issue.Over all it's a great TV mount that's super thin and practically un-noticeable.**As a note to people who have trouble with their power cord (I've found a few online already)... Samsung included 4 grey washers to push the TV out 1/2" so that it can clear the power cord. This solves the problem of the TV being pushed out at one corner by the plug end, though it does also increase the distance of the TV from the wall. Hopefully this helps those of you who were frustrated with the power cord (like I was)**

Samsung PN58C500 58-Inch 1080p Plasma HDTV (Black) Review

(More customer reviews)This is not as large as you might think. The overall size of this is nearly the same as my Samsung HP-S5053 50-Inch Plasma HDTV. The difference is that the old plasmas have a very large thick bezel and this has a very thin boarder - thus reducing its overall size.
To be clear, this absolutely has full widescreen 16:9 capability. It is HD 1080p compliant. Some widescreen movies are shot in 2.35:1, so those will still have black bars at the top and bottom. Maybe this is what the other reviewer was referring to.
The picture is very high quality here - much better than my 50" plasma. The blacks are very deep and I haven't seen any real evidence of ghosting.
The features on this are very full, but I don't use my Plasma for much more than a simple monitor - I run everything through an AV receiver. I access Netflix and other web apps through my LG BD570 Network Blu-ray Disc Player.
This is not 3D capable.
Oh, by the way, a note on model numbers: The PN58C500 is really the same as the Samsung PN58C550 58-Inch 1080p Plasma HDTV (Black), but was released for Black Friday deals with a new model number and - I believe - one less HDMI input than the 550. I believe it is otherwise the same set as the 550. This is not last years model. Last years models had a B instead of a C in the model number, ie. PN58B. . .
Be careful to know who your seller is. I bought this when the seller was Amazon and got free shipping, not someone else. It switches back and forth from time to time.

(More customer reviews)The tv arrived yesterday. I had to look at an included brochure to figure out how to put together the stand but it was pretty simple. Then I connected the white cable from my ATT Uverse DVR to the television. Then I called ATT Uverse and learned I'd have to pay $10/month more to get high definition television. I told them to go ahead and upgrade me.
Then I asked if they would send me an HDMI cable. They said no - you have to buy that yourself. I got online and did some research and found the Amazon AmazonBasics High-Speed HDMI Cable (6.5 Feet/2.0 Meters)[Supports 3D + Audio Return Channel]An engineer had written a review that you do NOT need an expensive HDMI cable. I ordered the Amazon one and it comes on Saturday.
A brochure in the paperwork that came with the tv says you have to connect your tv to the internet to get Netflix streaming and other things on your tv. If you go to the menus on the tv screen it also tells you to "connect your tv to the internet." But neither the paper instructions nor the onscreen instructions tells you how to conect the tv to the internet. I looked online and found that with a special Sony USB dangle (that cost a hundred bucks) I could connect the tv to my modem wirelessly. I really didn't want to spend that much money after having purchased the new tv. I called Sony tech support and asked what type of cable I should buy.
Sony told me to go to Radio Shack and buy an ethernet cable. The back of the ATT Uverse modem has 3 or 4 unused ethernet ports. The back of the tv has one "LAN" port. Sony said the ethernet cable can be used to connect the ethernet port on the modem to the LAN on the television. I did that and then on the tv clicked on the Netflix icon to get a code. I went to Netflix on my computer and input the code, which linked my netflix account to my tv via the internet.
I rented a movie through the tv internet connection from Amazon Video on Demand, and also watched a Netflix movie that was in my queue. You have to add movies to your queue using your computer, but once you have done that they show up on your tv and you can pick from all the ones in your queue for which Netflix has streaming rights. (For movies for which Netflix does not have streaming rights you will have to wait for a DVD to arrive in the mail. The issue of DVD rental versus streaming is one that is in flux right now - within a few years I think we will be able to stream everything instead of waiting on DVDs to arrive, but until all those rights get worked out we'll still have to use physical DVDs to watch some things on our televisions.)
Update: Today (Saturday) the HDMI cable that I ordered from Amazon arrived. I connected one end to the HDMI jack on the back of the ATT Uverse settop box/DVR and the other end I plugged into one of the HDMI ports on the back of the tv. VOILA. Oops, NO picture! TV was showing it is getting NO signal! I called ATT Uverse Tech Support. They had to reset my settop box/DVR before it would send a signal through the HDMI cable. The technician who was on the phone with me was able to do it himself (isn't the computer age GRAND?). After that the picture appeared. Then I saw that the picture didn't take up the entire screen. The tech walked me through the process of resetting the set top box to the 1080 setting and then the picture took up the entire screen.
The truth is that it IS a bit of a hassle setting up an HDTV to get HD signals from your cable/satellite/ATT Uverse/FIOS to your television, and getting your tv connected to the internet so that you can use services like Netflix and Amazon Video on Demand on it. It IS possible to do it yourself, but if you want it all done quickly and with minimal hassle then you might want to pay someone who deals with this type of thing all day to handle it for you. If you have time and either patience or determination (aka stubbornness) you can do it yourself.
I have one more thing to do - connect my new tv to my old stereo system so the sound comes through my stereo speakers. I'll take a shot at that next week.
Sony technical support and Uverse technical support did a good job at quickly figuring out what help I needed and explaining things to me.
As for the tv itself - beautiful picture, excellent sound through the tv speakers, easily understood onscreen menus, includes electronic components for multiple services - movies by Amazon video on demand, Netflix and QRiocity, videos via Youtube (I haven't tried that yet)Pandora for music, etc.
Definitely call Sony at 866-918-2485 for help as this tv did NOT come with good instructions.
